Lady Raiders to play Mississippi State in NCAA first round

The first round of the women’s 29th NCAA tournament is only a few days away and No. 10 seed MTSU is preparing to take on No. 7 Mississippi State for the first time since 1990.

Both teams have met six times over the years, dating back to 1976, but have not met in two decades.

The Lady Raiders are making their 13th appearance in the NCAA tournament and hold an all-times series (4-2) advantage over Mississippi State. The winner of the game will play either No. 2 seed Ohio State or No. 15 seed St. Francis on Tuesday, March 23 in the second round.

This is the sixth NCAA Tournament for the Lady Bulldogs. Last year the team advanced to the second round in the tournament after knocking off Texas in the first round.

Mississippi State is packed with momentum, but MTSU has a secret weapon. Well, she’s not really a secret anymore after scoring 132 points in the Sun Belt Conference.

That’s right. The nation’s leading scorer, Alysha Clark, is a Lady Raider and averages 28.7 points per game. Clark’s presence on the floor will be important, but other players will also have to step up and knock down shots.

After her performance in the Sun Belt Conference, it's apparent that defenders can’t leave Clark open underneath the basket. For this reason, Mississippi State players will most likely have several players on Clark at all times. If the 5-foot-10 senior can’t find an opening in the paint then a win will have to come from outside shooters.

MTSU’s leading shooter and senior guard, Jackie Pickel, will be feeling her share of pressure Sunday if Clark can’t find an opening.

Earlier this month, Pickel was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year and selected for the all-conference second team. She also leads the Sun Belt Conference in 3-pointers and steals, averaging 14 points per game.

Other players to watch are junior guard Anne Marie Lanning, senior forward Brandi Brown and junior forward Emily Queen, all average about 7 points per game.

Senior point guard Chelsia Lymon averages 16 points per game but has been playing with a hurt shoulder since earlier on in the season.

Will these players be able to make the necessary shots to win the game? Or will the Lady Raiders fall in the first round?

I guess we’ll find out at 1:30 p.m. central Sunday, March 21. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Separate Is Not Equal

It's really sad to read the phrase, "I know it's only women's basketball," in 2010. It's also extremely offensive and sexist of sport writers to imply that women's leagues are inferior to men's.

But this exact sentence appeared on the Web site of a news publication Tuesday night.

At first, I thought it might be a misprint so I refreshed the page. When the page reloaded, the statement was still on the screen. I kept reading but couldn't shake my feeling of disappointment.

Why was it necessary for the reporter to make this comment? It was irrelevant to the story and indirectly claims that women's basketball can't measure up to the skills displayed in male leagues.

This is untrue.

In fact, many men's teams have performed poorly this year and women's sports have excelled. A good example of this is the UConn Huskies.

I'm not a fan of UConn, but the women's basketball team have put on an impressive performance this year. The Lady Huskies have been undefeated this season, while the UConn men's basketball team lost its last four games. You do the math.

And when it comes to the NBA, I'll admit that it is the most popular sports league. I will, however, not admit that the WNBA depends on the NBA for its funding. Don't believe me?

Then read Slam Online's article "WNBA Weekly Mailbag – 2/17/10 – On net losses, and a twist on the double standard," where NBA Commissioner David Stern is quoted as saying that the WNBA is more profitable than the NBA.

“The NBA is far less profitable than the WNBA,” he said. “We’re losing a lot of money ($400 million) amongst a large number of teams. We’re budgeting the WNBA to break even this year.”

This is more evidence that the WNBA does have an audience and is growing by itself.

But this post is not about whether men's basketball is more profitable or popular than women's. It's about gender equality–something that still hasn't been reached in the world of sports or outside of the arenas.

Publications should consider equal coverage of women's and men's sports and refrain from interjecting sexist comments into their articles. By doing this, reporters are sending the message to readers that women's basketball is a joke.

When it comes to limited coverage, I understand revenue and Internet traffic is a huge factor for online publications, but I truly believe the WNBA and women's college basketball leagues could be just as successful as male athletics if given equal media coverage.

MARCH MADNESS: Tennessee teams stacked with talent

This is the year of Tennessee women's college basketball! I can feel it.

The UT Lady Vols defeated Kentucky 70-62 Sunday, March 7 in the SEC Championship game, bringing the team's total SEC titles to 14. The team will now compete in the first round of the NCAA tournament on March 20.

Pat Summitt currently has eight NCAA Championships and earned her last two titles in 2007 and 2008. She's coached several players that have went on to star in the WNBA such as Candace Parker, Kara Lawson and Tamika Catchings.

But unfortunately, Summitt has a young and inexperienced team this year. The team has won its last 14 games, but can it maintain that consistency in the tournament?

Another Tennessee team to watch in the NCAA tournament is the MTSU Lady Raiders. The team extended its 15-game winning streak to 16 Tuesday, March 9 by defeating UALR for the Sun Belt Championship.

The team is notorious for 3-pointers and the home of the NCAA's leading scorer for the past two consecutive seasons: Amber Holt in 2008 and Alysha Clark in 2009.

As a senior this year, Clark is putting up big numbers and grabbing excessive rebounds. She broke a SBC record on Sunday, March 7 against North Texas when she scored a game-high 40 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

UALR's Chasity Reed retaliated by scoring 41 points against New Orleans Monday, March 8, but Clark set a new record Monday against Western Kentucky Monday with 44 points. She also broke her own record and added 48 points to the Lady Raiders' win over UALR Tuesday, earning another SBC title for MTSU.

Now the Lady Raiders have their sights on an NCAA title, but will they be able to make it past the first round? Tune in March 20-23 for the first and second rounds to find out.

It's obvious that both teams have the skills necessary to play in the NCAA tournament. But only time will tell if the players will be able to endure the stress and perform at a championship level. In the meantime, I'm rooting for both! GO TENNESSEE!

Murfreesboro Police release 2009 crime report

Murfreesboro Police reported Tuesday that the city’s overall crime rate dropped by -1 percent in 2009.

A data report released today revealed that homicide, assault, larceny and motor vehicle crimes decreased, while reports of rape, robbery, burglary and arson are on the rise.

The city had 41 reports of rape, a 32 percent increase from 2008, and a 71 percent climb in arson acts.

There were also 180 robberies committed last year and 240 more burglaries than in 2008.

Chief of Police Glenn Chrisman said officers were able to reduce a lot of theses acts, as well as gang-related violent crimes associated with them.

The number of homicides decreased by one last year, and reports of assault decreased from 1696 in 2008 to 1542 in 2009.

By using the Automated Red-light Enforcement System, officers were also able to measure traffic violations and issue 28,752 traffic citations and 547 warning citations.

But the report said fatal traffic crashes increased from six in 2008 to 10 in 2009.

NBA could become gender-neutral in 10 years

The ongoing argument in the world of sports this morning has been whether or not women will ever be able to play in the NBA.

I'm sure other sports issues are going on too, but this caught my attention because I happen to be a huge fan of the WNBA.

The whole debate began when NBA commissioner David Stern told "Sports Illustrated" that he believes women will be playing in the league within the next decade.

"I think that's well within the range of probability," Stern said. "I don't want to get into all kinds of arguments with players and coaches about the likelihood. But I really think it's a good possibility."

Some NBA coaches agreed with Stern, while others thought having a female athlete would be more of a publicity stunt. This depends on whether a woman would actually be allowed to play or just sit on the bench.

"If she was truly a full-time player rather than a modern day Eddie Gaedel," said Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban of the dwarf who played major league baseball in a 1951 publicity stunt, "it would be enormous."

It would be enormous. In fact, it could possibly alter the way society views women's sports. If women are tough enough to play with the men then maybe the WNBA and NBA would be seen as having equal competitors.

Often women's basketball college coaches such as Pat Summitt hire male team managers to play against their girls to make them more physical. This is a good technique, but I think it sends the message that women don't measure up to the athleticism of men.

As of now, the top players in the WNBA, Candace Parker, Diana Taurasi and Tamika Catchings, aren't considered strong or fast enough to play with NBA superstars Lebron James or Kobe Bryant.

After the article in "Sports Illustrated," James said in an ESPN interview that 10 years is "pushing it."

"Ten years?" James asked. "That's, like, right around the corner. [In] 10 years, I'll be 34. I'll still be in the NBA. I think 10 years is pushing it, honestly."

I find James' quote a little insulting because it implies that he is the best player in the league right now and no one will be able to take him on, especially not a feeble woman.

I'll agree with Stern that it might take a few years, but I truly believe when the right woman athlete comes along she will be able to knock down shots and defend a male athlete.

In the "Sports Illustrated" article by Ian Thomsen, New York Knicks president Donnie Walsh said the women in the WNBA play better than he did in college. He said women can play under the rim, drive and shoot just like shorter male NBA athletes. Who's to say a 6-foot-1 female player couldn't act as a point guard for a NBA team?

This would make history but it certainly wouldn't be the first time an NBA team signed a woman athlete.

In 1979 the Indiana Pacers signed Ann Meyers Drysdale, now GM of the WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury. Drysdale was a three-time All-American guard at UCLA and became the first woman to sign a contract with the NBA. Too bad the Pacers released her before the season even started.

Drysdale recalls that period of her life and the media's coverage of the signing.

"I had been liked by the media at that time," said the 5-9 Meyers, but that changed when she joined the Pacers. "I recall at the press conference that I was attacked pretty good by the media. You know: what are you doing, you're taking some guy's job, you can't compete, you're too slow, you're going to get hurt, you're too small, da-ta-da. But somebody gives you an opportunity, you're supposed to say no?"

Will the same thing happen again when the female Michael Jordon comes along? I guess only time will tell. What do you think?

Police: Female sexually assaulted at fraternity house

A female alleges she was sexually assaulted at a fraternity house on Greek Row between 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. and 6 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 4.

An e-mail alert sent out by Campus Police said the alleged victim told officers she could not remember anything that happened between that time period but believes she was sexually assaulted. Police did not specify which fraternity house the alleged victim said she was assaulted in.

The alert said police are trying to contact a friend of the victim to substantiate the location of the assault.

The incident is under investigation. Anyone with pertinent information is asked to call MTSU Campus Police at (615) 898-2424.

It's a thankless job, but somebody's got to do it...

Lately, I've been reading up on crime and court coverage techniques. I came across a Web site with some pretty unsettling statistics of journalists who have died on the job. Right now, I cover some crime and courts for the Las Vegas Sun, and it's scary to think that I could die on an assignment but it's true. I was aware of this when I fell in love with journalism, and it's something I'll always carry in the back of my mind. Regardless, I love what I do and I'm willing to risk my life to relay important information to the public. Read below if you're considering a career in journalism.

Personal Safety

Journalists frequently are at risk while on assignment.

The Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ) says 389 journalists were killed while on the job from 1992 to 2001. Of those, 62 were killed in crossfire and 298 were victims of homicide. Fourteen of the victims were Americans, and only four of those were working in the U.S. while killed.

In an infamous domestic case, Arizona Republic reporter Don Bolles was killed by a car bomb in 1976 as a result of his investigations of organized crime. Two men were convicted and sentenced to prison in the case.

CPJ said at least 11 journalists since Bolles have been slain in the U.S. because of their work. In all but one case, the victims were immigrant journalists working in languages other than English.

Journalists sometimes are arrested or injured while covering clashes involving law enforcement. In recent years, such incidents were reported at International Monetary Fund demonstrations in Seattle and Washington, D.C., and during the federal raid to seize the Cuban boy Elian Gonzalez in Miami.

Some journalists have reported they were wearing proper identification when attacked by renegade police officers or units. In one recent case, a radio journalist covering the funeral of a man shot by New York police said he was assaulted and arrested on trumped-up charges.

Crime reporters can face special safety concerns while on assignment. In 1984, a New York newspaper reporter was seriously beaten during an apparent robbery in Brooklyn. In some big cities, a few crime reporters on assignment use war-zone safety devices, including helmets, body armor or outer garments boldly marked MEDIA.

But this strategy has been known to backfire. Over the past 35 years, journalists frequently have been targeted during riots.

Twin Cities Examples
In 2002, several Minneapolis journalists were injured during rioting that followed the shooting of a child in that city by a police bullet that ricocheted. A TV vehicle was torched, and several journalists were attacked.

A similar scenario occurred in that city 10 years ago. In that case, television reporter Julia Sandidge was seriously injured when she was punched in the head by a rioter. She was left unable to walk for two months. Sandidge told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that the crowd turned on her and a cameraman.

She said, "It does happen very quickly. You really can't anticipate how it's going to happen." She said rioters saw her as part of the establishment.

"We were there and they were angry," she said. "They saw us more as the arm of the law than as an unbiased journalist."

Sandidge eventually left the daily news business, burdened by stress. She said the assault changed her perspective. She began to identify with victims.

"We'd cover crime and show the video on the news and not take into consideration the victim's family watching that," she told the Star Tribune. "I'd feel grief…I'd go home and cry myself to sleep at night."

Sandidge said she frequently shows video footage of her attack and its aftermath to journalism students. "I like to let young wanna-be reporters see what they are up against," she said.

Tips: Wear clear identification. Carry a cell phone. Store an emergency bag in your trunk with a change of clothing, bad-weather gear, a flashlight and a first-aid kit. In potentially dangerous situations, such as a riot, wear footwear and clothing that allow you to move quickly. Consider protective gear, such as a helmet. If journalists are being targeted, get to a safe location.

Jam skating group offers youngsters creative outlet, support

Hip-hop beats blared from a stereo as Le Var Maxwell stared at his reflection in a mirror at his in-house studio.

The metal plates on his striped roller skates clanked against the wood floor while he walked through the steps of a routine in his head. At the exact count, he began to react to each musical beat with an arm movement and foot shuffle.

His feet slid smoothly across the floor, and he spun around in circles on his toes.

When he stopped spinning, he looked to the other members of his group and said, “Let’s loosen up and freestyle a little bit.”

Another round? No thanks.

Yesterday the newsroom had another round of layoffs. This time Greenspun Interactive suspended publication of two community newspapers that work in connection with the Las Vegas Sun. Everyone surrounding my cubicle was let go. Those people helped me and taught me how to cover courts, city council meetings and crime scenes.

I was on assignment at a preliminary hearing, so I didn’t know they had left until I arrived at the office around 5:30 p.m. Their desks were empty and the newsroom was quiet. It’s normally quiet, but not like this. Everyone is walking around like zombies and worrying about their jobs. I don’t blame them. If I wasn’t doing an internship, I would be just as worried.

Having to see amazing journalists let go because of advertising sales is harder than I thought. I’ve been told for the last five years that the newspaper business is in a slump, but I guess I didn’t recognize how bad things actually were. Now I see talented individuals losing their jobs and it makes me scared. Some people in the newsroom have said that the worst is yet to come. I hope it’s already over.

The thing that sets the Las Vegas Sun apart from most newspapers is its online presence. The print edition of the Las Vegas Sun answers the question why, but the online gives you breaking news and answers all of the other questions. My fear is that the economy is going to push the Sun’s Web site to reflect the print edition.

We’re running low on having enough people to update the Web site, and the interns are taking on a more active role. This is a good thing because I’ll learn more by stepping into the shoes of other journalists and trying to keep their beats afloat. I can step into their shoes, but I’ll certainly never fill them.

I have two semesters left until I graduate. I’m determined to find a job in journalism, but I can’t help but ask myself “what if I get fired?” Where will I go? Are you just supposed to pick up and leave? I can’t even imagine the heartbreak some of people who were let go yesterday are dealing with. It’s something you’ll never know until it happens to you.

Group rallies to bring attention to child prostitution

Chants broke out on Las Vegas Boulevard late Saturday as community members gathered to raise awareness and money to help stop child prostitution.

Stop Child Trafficking Now organizers walked through residential areas carrying signs with slogans like “Real Men Don’t Buy Sex” and “Stop Buying Our Girls.”

Joseph South, local community organizer for Stop Child Trafficking Now, said the goal of the walk was to raise awareness and thank investigators working to save children from trafficking operations. Stop Child Trafficking Now is a national group that has organized walks in other major cities.

Andrea Pitcher, who walked with the group, said the "24/7" atmosphere of Las Vegas means teenagers can go unsupervised. She said parents work late hours and aren’t always around their children -- a factor that can push them in the direction of prostitution, she said.

“This is a very fast economy,” she said of prostitution. “It’s also very money-driven.”

She said lack of supervision allows children to get on the Internet and look for modeling jobs that aren't always as they appear. Terri Miller, who walked with the group Saturday, said she lost her niece after she responded to a fake modeling job.

“My niece was trafficked from here to Japan,” Miller said. “Luckily, her family made contact with her and got her back home.”

According to Regulated Management, a Las Vegas-based group that says its mission is to "evaluate the problems and effects of the criminal enterprise of illegal prostitution on Las Vegas society," about 1,500 children from 40 states were victims of sex trafficking in Las Vegas over a 13-year period.

“Las Vegas has a reason why it’s called Sin City,” said Bob Fischer, communications director of Regulated Management. “There are all different forms of prostitution, and there’s a great deal of apathy in this city.”

Jackie Capasso, of Christians Against Sexual Slavery, said while child and adult prostitution are separate issues, many women got into prostitution a young age.

UNLV researcher and assistant professor Alexis Kennedy said homeless children exposed to prostitution are taken to jail instead of receiving counseling.

“We’ve drawn them here with our bright lights and now we have to take care of them,” she said. “An 11-year-old is a child, and we had a 13-year-old arrested last weekend.”

Kennedy urged residents to speak to their legislators about the need for a safe house in Las Vegas.

For now, Las Vegas has Safe Place, a nationwide project that helps children who have been sexually or domestically abused get back on their feet. Safe Place spokesman Larry Lovelett said Safe Place, which has a drop-off center, is a service open around the clock for young people when they need help.

Lovelett said children need counselors who can talk to them about their victimization.

“Pimps have PhDs in human nature,” Lovelett said. “They are playing a psychological game with these kids.”

Renaissance Festival lures ‘knights’ of all ages to Sunset Park

Knights, fairies and guilds are gathering in Sunset Park this weekend for the 16th annual Age of Chivalry Renaissance Festival.

Participant Sherrie Gibbons said attending the festival is like walking into another world. She said she first became interested in the Renaissance period through her daughter.

"It’s a chance to get away from mundane life, especially with the economy right now," Gibbons said.

Sandra Navarro has a personal tie with the festival. She said she has been bringing her son and daughter to the event for six years.

Her daughter, Melissa, said the festival gives her an excuse to dress up like a pirate. She said she is intrigued by the pirate lifestyle and has a crossbones tattoo on her shoulder.

While the festival offers a chance for locals to show off their Renaissance wardrobes, Scott Fitzpatrick said he enjoys the live steel competition, including heavy armor on Saturday and fencing on Sunday. He said this is the 11th year the festival has offered the competition.

"Anyone can participate as long as they follow our safety guidelines," Fitzpatrick said.

Las Vegas middle schools are joining in on the fun, too. Candy Rutledge, senior program administrator for Clark County Parks and Recreation, said the festival allows schools to bring their students in for free.

Las Vegas Day School teacher Jeff Segel said the school brought sixth-graders to the festival to experience the history they're learning in the classroom.

"Anything you study comes to life more when you do things like this," Segel said. "It’s a lot of fun for them. They get to see the artifacts and it’s a good way for them to learn."

Sixth-grader Romina Montti, 11, said she would rather attend the festival than read her textbook.

"It reinforces what they are teaching us in school," Montti said.

Some children were on school field trips, but others participated in the festival because of their passion for the time period.

Holly Long, 8, said she enjoys working at Age of Chivalry Renaissance Festival. She works at her family’s tent, Dragon Bubbles, and said she chose to be a flower fairy this year.

"My parents got me into this," she said. "It’s an amazing experience."

Besides offering bubble vials, jewels and meat pies, the festival also features various educational programs like the Pirates Parrot show, which focuses on parrots from across the world.

Rutledge said the parrot show is especially popular among children.

"He gets all the kids together and teaches them about the birds," Rutledge said. "He lets the birds fly around and land on kids’ shoulders."

Birdman Joseph Krathwohl was at the festival Friday with his companion and bateleur eagle Sheba. Krathwohl said he has had Sheba for more than 26 years and has learned bateleur eagle territorial calls from her.

"I help to teach people about the use of birds for prey – not only in the Renaissance period but for the last 7,000 years of our history," Krathwohl said. "If you could ride up and have several falcons and one big golden eagle on your arm, then everyone who saw you arrive knew you were a powerful man, not woman. Women were not allowed to touch our birds."

The festival will also have entertainment by comedians, sword swallowers and fire breathers. Mary Evanoff will perform in the "Merrie May Show" by juggling and pole walking, while Mike Foster will perform his spin on the movie and play "Sweeney Todd."

Live music will also be provided by The Wild Celts, The Prodigals and Swagger.

"It’s all about our history, and world history is our history," said Las Vegas resident Jim Hartung. "If we don’t know it, we’re doomed to repeat it."

Fundraiser aims to lift spirits of city’s homeless teens

The underlying theme of this year’s third annual H.O.P.E. for the Holidays event was homelessness is not a choice.

Kelly Robson, director of the Help of Southern Nevada Youth Center, said if teenagers leave home to get away from a bad situation, it’s not their choice to become homeless.

“They’re grateful for anything, because one of the hardest things for youths is to be thrown aside,” Robson said.

A fundraiser was held at the Henderson Pavilion Promenade on Saturday with donations and proceeds going to five local organizations that provide resources and housing for homeless teenagers.

Event chair Judy Alewel said last year’s event raised $29,000. She said with today's sour economy, she will be happy to reach that amount again.

“Whatever we make, we will be grateful for anything that is donated,” Alewel said. “The teens want to feel normal and we want to go that extra step and help them feel normal.”

Alewel said more than 4,000 teenagers are living on the streets in Las Vegas. She said it’s important for the Help of Southern Nevada Youth Center, Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, Street Teens, Living Grace Home and Clark County School District Title 1 Hope to work together and provide the best services possible for each person.

Jazmyn Akins, 18, is a resident at the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. She said the organization helped her get into college and pursue her dreams of becoming a commercial photographer and actress.

“My father had a gambling problem and sold our house,” Akins said. “I was living with my neighbors, and I didn’t even know them.”

Akins said her mother works in North Carolina as a teacher and contacted the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth after Akins was "couchsurfing" for a couple of months.

“They put me in a condo with a housemate and take us grocery shopping every two weeks,” Akins said. “My roommate is in high school and the organization makes sure she leads an actual high school life.”

Nancy Amaya, 19, was in a similar situation before she graduated from high school. She said the Help of Southern Nevada Youth Center took her in because her family wasn’t stable enough to care for her.

“They helped me graduate high school, and I was voted class clown and prom royalty,” Amaya said, smiling.

According to H.O.P.E. statistics, 80 percent of homeless teenagers would like to be able to finish high school. The majority of homeless teenagers living in Las Vegas are 16 years old.

Sariah Johnson, 20, said homeless teens should utilize services offered to them. She said walking into the Help of Southern Nevada Youth Center felt like having a clean slate.

“I grew up in a drug neighborhood,” Johnson said. “Life is about choices and you have the opportunity to have better if you want better.”

The event also featured games, a silent auction, train rides, face painting, hair dying and live entertainment by local bands and singer and impressionist Tom Stevens.

Stevens performs impressions at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and served as the moderator at the event. He said he wanted to participate because it brings awareness to the community.

“I wasn’t aware this many were homeless,” Stevens said. “I have been fortunate enough in my life and it touches me to know that kids out here are living on the streets.”

Quin White, 23, lead singer of the band Amarionette, said he wanted to be involved because the issue of homelessness is often neglected. The band dedicated a song called “Apart From the Same” to all the homeless teenagers.

“It’s a song about being different and not feeling like you’re like everyone else,” White said. “No one is better than anyone else, and these kids are like everyone else."

Woman charged in NLV police standoff to stand trial

The case of a woman accused of holding North Las Vegas Police at bay during a June standoff will proceed to trial after a preliminary hearing today.

Carla Eagleton, 52, is charged with two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of battery with a deadly weapon and assault with a deadly weapon.

North Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Stephen Dahl sent the case to District Court and scheduled Eagleton’s arraignment for 1:30 p.m. Oct. 26. Defense attorney Ronald Paulson said Eagleton would plead not guilty and plans to go to trial.

After Eagleton was arrested in June, a North Las Vegas justice of the peace ordered she undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if she is competent to stand trial. Eagleton passed the evaluation.

At the preliminary hearing Friday, Eagleton appeared alongside Paulson and listened to testimony given by her husband, Kenneth McDede, and North Las Vegas police officers Jason Olson and John Thomason.

McDede said at about 9 p.m. on June 4, he and Eagleton had an argument that escalated to a physical altercation when Eagleton grabbed an aluminum bat. He said Eagleton began to chase him and swung the bat, trying to hit him. While running from Eagleton, McDede said he called 911 and ran out of the house.

He said he ran to a convenience store and waited for police to arrive. McDede said he met police at the house in the 3500 block of Coleman Street and explained what happened. He said he saw Eagleton drive off with his 10-year-old grandson before police arrived.

After filing a domestic battery report, officers and McDede left the residence, McDede said during cross-examination. He went to work and returned home at about 5 a.m. He parked across the street and kept receiving phone calls from Eagleton that said, “Don’t come home. I’ll shoot intruders,” he said.

In court today, he said he had given Eagleton the gun, but said she wasn’t trained on how to use it properly. McDede said Eagleton had asked him to train her, but he never got around to it.

Afraid to go home, McDede then called police again to update them on the situation. Three patrol units and four police officers, including Thomason and Olson, arrived at the residence at about 6 a.m.

Olson testified today that he wasn’t involved in the domestic dispute altercation the night before, but because of Eagleton’s threatening phone calls, his supervisor called for backup. Olson said the officers parked three houses south of the residence and approached on foot with their guns drawn.

He said he and Thomason went through the back yard to the backdoor, while officers Brian Wheeler and Derek Fellig positioned at the front entrance. Olson said Wheeler and Fellig knocked on the front door asked Eagleton to come out.

“Over radio, we were told that Eagleton was knocking back and challenging officers to come in and get her,” Olson said. “She was yelling and screaming. It was inaudible.”

She said, “the house was set up to kill police officers,” Olson testified.

Olson said he looked through a window and saw Eagleton standing in what appeared to be a kitchen, holding a silver handgun.

“I looked in the window and saw her pointing a handgun at me,” Olson said. “I was fearful for my life. I yelled ‘gun’ and ducked. I saw Thomason dive out of the corner of my eye and that’s when I heard two shots fired.”

Thomason said he felt debris hitting him when he dove. After the incident, he said he found a bullet fragment lodged in his boot.

“I’ve never been so scared in my life,” Thomason said.

Shortly after firing two gunshots, Thomason said Eagleton came out of the house with nothing in her hands. He said he pointed his gun at her and told her to put her hands up. Eagleton ran back into the house screaming, he said.

McDede said in court today that his wife is on medication. Her medical condition is unknown at this time.

The standoff lasted more than five hours, according to police reports. The report said Eagleton released her 10-year-old grandson after an hour, unharmed.

Prosecutor Michelle Fleck said the grandson might be called to testify if the case proceeds to trial.

No one was injured during the standoff, but Olson said his supervisor called in SWAT team officers as a precaution. Eagleton was taken into custody after the standoff and booked at the Clark County Detention Center. She is being held on bail set at $140,000 for all charges, according to jail records.

Celebs hit the links at Justin Timberlake charity tourney

Instead of hitting the red carpet, celebrities stepped onto the golf course today for the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Pro-Am competition.

The event was broken into morning and afternoon tee-offs with 36 groups participating, including professional golfers, amateurs and celebrities.

Timberlake kicked things off around 11:30 a.m. with professional golfer Anthony Kim and amateurs Sal Masekela and David Bomar. Crowds swarmed the course to get a look at Timberlake as he greeted his mother, Lynn, before teeing off.

Gina Cochran, visiting from Georgia, arrived at the course three hours before Timberlake was scheduled to show up. She said she missed last year’s event and didn’t want to miss the action this year.

“I enjoy the PGA and Justin,” Cochran said. “This is such a good cause. I would love to see more celebrities come out and support this.”

Wayne Lachut, board chairman for Shriners Hospitals for Children, said the event has been held for three years, and each year the turnout is better.

“The bigger the names, the better we are,” Lachut said. “We’re happy if we break even, but it would be nice to raise $5 million.”

Lachut said the Shriners Hospitals for Children spend $2 million a day and $28.60 a second to improve pediatric care for children. He said Timberlake was brought in last year to try and spread awareness among the younger generations. Alice Cooper and Kenny G will bring in the older crowds and Timberlake will bring in younger crowds, he said.

Timberlake’s former band mate Chris Kirkpatrick was also putting his golf skills to the test at the competition. He said he’s glad Timberlake got involved with the cause.

“It’s great they brought Justin in because he’s a young guy and will bring in new people,” Kirkpatrick said. “I love coming here and meeting people and getting out on the golf course to play golf and have fun.”

Comedian and actor George Lopez certainly had fun on the course. He joked with fans, kicked a clown and even made technical sergeant Jerard Waymer do push-ups.

“I try to compete in all the tournaments I can with the people I have posters of on my wall,” he said. “It’s tough to raise money because of the economy, but this raises the money.”

Accompanying Lopez in Group 20 was former boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya.

Tom Sailers, from San Diego, said he attended the event to watch De La Hoya play golf.

“I’ve heard Oscar is a very good amateur golf player,” Sailers said.

While watching Lopez and De La Hoya putt, Laurie Houck of Charlotte, N.C., said the Pro-Am is the best part of the event.

“What other sport can you get this close to the athletes?” she said.

Rock singer and songwriter Alice Cooper didn’t mind getting up close and personal this morning with fans. He signed autographs and posed for pictures while sporting a grin on his face.

Cooper said he wanted to participate in the event because he had three days off from his Theatre of Death Tour and wanted to help out.

“When you see these kids, you want to play every day for them,” Cooper said.

He said he’s been playing golf for 28 years, and it has helped him quit drinking.

“I quit drinking and started playing golf,” Cooper said. “I traded one bad habit for another one.”

Some of the other Pro-Am attendees were PGA professional Davis Love III, professional poker player Phil Hellmuth and “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” actor Alfonso Ribeiro.

Natalie Gulbis, of the LPGA and a former employee of Donald Trump on the TV show “Celebrity Apprentice,” said the special guest list of professional golfers and celebrities help increase knowledge about the event.

“Every single time it gets mentioned, it only does more to get the awareness out about Shriners Hospitals,” she said.

Expect the Unexpected

Today I got a wake up call from reality. The Las Vegas Sun shut down 702.tv and let a lot of people go.

I’m not sure whom all they let go, but I know my friend and videographer Evelio Contreras is no longer working here. :(

He was teaching me about visual storytelling and how to piece together a video. We were working on a jam skating video and story package together. It’s just hard to believe that he’s gone now.

It’s been a sad day all around, and really woke me up. I really love my job and what I do, but there’s no guarantee that jobs in journalism will exist in a few years. We all know the economy is bad right now, but what if it doesn’t get any better?

I know I’m supposed to remain optimistic but it’s a serious question. I’ve never had to deal with a staff member leaving not by choice, mainly because I’ve never worked in a professional newsroom.

Advertising is a big part of the reason why newspapers are failing, but there are other factors as well. I know I’m on an internship, so I feel pretty stable right now but what happens when I graduate? If I was a full-time employee it could have been me who was let go today.

It’s a terrible feeling and I hope no more employees have to experience it in the near future. I wish I could say NEVER but that’s unrealistic right now.

To all the employees who were let go today, I hope you find quality paying jobs because you’re all good at what you do and should pursue your dreams.

Las Vegas Tall Club

Hola,

I know it's been a while since I've posted anything, but I wanted to post one of my recent stories about a Tall Club. My editor Cara McCoy pitched me the idea and I thought it was interesting and unique. I had no clue that the local chapter was part of an international organization.

After talking to the members and hearing their stories growing up and feeling out of place, I felt really bad that people have to endure that kind of discrimination.

All of the members were really nice and even wanted me to pose for a picture. Needless to say, I was the shortest one there, and I'm 5-foot-8. I have posted the picture of me and the tallest member John Allen, who is 6-foot-11.

Some say life is short, but 6-foot-11 John Allen isn't.

Allen is the social co-chair of the Las Vegas Tall Club, and the tallest member in the organization.

“It’s become a way of life,” Allen said. “For the most part it doesn’t bother me, but when people ask me how tall I am, I say 211 centimeters or 83 inches. If they want to know that badly they can figure it out.”

The Las Vegas Tall Club chapter of the international organization started in 1983 and has been recruiting members ever since. It's one of about 65 such clubs in the United States and its 50 or so members meet on a regular basis for everything from bowling to bikes rides to picnics.

This past weekend the group met for its semiannual garage sale to raise money for a scholarship it offers to a Las Vegas-area high school student.

The $1,000 Tall Awareness scholarship is given each year to one high school student who has applied to colleges and meets the height requirement.

Scholarship chair Lydia Garza said last year’s scholarship went to a student at Valley High School who also received a second scholarship from the international organization.

“We want to award someone who is tall and can express themselves well,” Garza said. “With the way the economy is we’re getting more and more interest.”

Garza said the club eventually hopes to award two scholarships per year.

The scholarship has no grade point average requirement, but does involve writing an essay about Marfan Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue. Garza said most people who are diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome are tall, therefore, writing the essay allows students to do research and become more aware of the disorder.

Pat Blanchard is a founding member of the Las Vegas chapter. She said the basic premise of the club is for tall people to form friendships among other tall people.

The club specifies tallness as 6-foot-2 for men and 5-foot-10 for women. Anyone who meets the height requirement and is 21 or older can join the group.

Blanchard said she was 5-foot-11½-inches when she graduated from high school. Social co-chair Debbie Prince said she was 5-foot-11½-inches when she was 13.

“I felt like I didn’t fit in,” Prince said. “It was kind of hard to take pictures with your friends because your head would get cut off.”

Prince said finding clothing that fit her has been a problem over the years, so she started her own clothing line called Tall Dolls Rule. She said she created the clothing line to cater to tall women’s needs.

“If you go to JC Penney or Sears, all they’ll sell is the basic talls,” Prince said. “They won’t take a risk.”

She said she travels to international Tall Club meetings on the weekends and sells her clothes to pay for her travel expenses. Las Vegas club Vice President John Morath, who is 6-foot-3, said clothing is typically harder to find for tall women.

Allen said men also have trouble shopping for clothes because "big and tall" stores cater more to big than tall.

“Their sign says Big and Tall, but their sizes only go up to 6-foot-2 or 6-foot-3,” Allen said.

Morath said the international Tall Club has also raised awareness of other concerns it has, such as the need for a king-size bed in hotel rooms and more legroom in airplane seats.

Prince said the group continues to target younger members to join its ranks.

“We’re trying to get younger people, but at the age of 46 I’m one of the youngest,” Prince said. “We think it’s because being taller isn’t such a big deal anymore.”

Gaining more members is important to the growth of the international organization, she said. She said club members are like family.

“It’s like living in a small town with the bad and the good,” Prince said. “We bicker and fight like family, but if someone is sick then someone else is cooking for and taking care of that person.”

I didn't even know it at the time, but I scooped the Associated Press today!

This morning I went to cover Roger Mayweather's arraignment for battery-strangulation and felony coercion charges. Mayweather didn't show up and the judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest. I wrote the story and submitted it as soon as I could.

Later I found out that I scooped the AP and The Review Journal.

Back To Basics

Last week I got schooled, but it was a good thing. I needed someone to show me how to cover a collision scene more thoroughly and that’s exactly what I got.

I was covering a one-car collision that killed one 16-year-old and left two other teenagers in serious condition with Las Vegas Sun reporter Jean Reid Norman. I learned a lot from Norman about how to work with information and listen carefully for what you might need. Even though neighbors nearby might ramble and have no useful information, they might slip up and say something beneficial.

I’ve covered crime before but never vehicle accidents. I felt like I grew as a journalist by working with her that day. She taught me things and I feel like I’m a better journalist because of it. So yes, I got schooled and it was totally worth it.

For the weekend, I covered a walk to raise awareness about child trafficking and prostitution. Even though I wasn’t covering breaking news, I still used some of the techniques that Jean taught me. I think the story turned out well because I was willing and able to dig a little deeper.

I also got to know my co-workers better this weekend. Videographer and former 702.tv anchor Denise Spidle invited me to a potluck dinner at her house. The entire office team showed up, and I had a great time getting to know everyone better.

Denise is also helping me learn Final Cut Pro. I’m so excited about this! And the best part is I might be able to start shooting videos soon. I’m already getting to shoot pictures and post galleries, but video is my ultimate goal. Plus, videographers are using my dream camera that I wanted for Sidelines. That’s right. I will actually get to use an AG-DVX100B Panasonic camera! Did I mention I’m excited about this? Haha.

In addition to video training, I will be covering more court cases, which is pretty awesome in my book. I will also be writing a feature sports piece on BMX rider Nathan Berkheimer. It’s too bad I won’t actually get to meet him, but it’s still a story.

It’s only Monday and the week is filling up fast. Man, I love my job! ☺

Holocaust survivor speaks to students about painful memories

Holocaust survivor Ben Lesser doesn’t need a serial number tattoo to remind him of his childhood spent in a concentration camp. He said he will have the experience etched in his mind forever.

During his time imprisoned by the Nazis, Lesser witnessed innumerable horrors. He was pistol whipped, starved and stabbed. He lost family members. But he never lost his faith, he said.

“Why was I so fortunate to live?” Lesser said. “God needed a witness.”

To cope with his memories, Lesser said, one of the most therapeutic exercises is sharing his story with younger generations. On Tuesday, he told his story to more than 300 students at the Las Vegas Academy, 315 South 7th St.

Lesser described the experience as “five years of living hell on earth.” He said he lost everyone in his family except for his sister Lola, who is an artist in New York. She has painted several pieces of her memories from a Jewish ghetto in Poland, he said.

In 1944, Lesser said he was transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where he lost the remaining members of his family. Lesser said he had to fall asleep at night to the sound of people screaming and burning in fire pits.

“Fire is one of the methods that [Adolf] Hilter used to almost completely annihilate the Jewish population of the earth,” Lesser said.

Lesser asked students to never forget the Holocaust. He handed out 300 “remembrance” pins from his Zachor Holocaust Remembrance Foundation. Lesser said he received his first pin from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and has since given out 25,000 pins.

In conjunction with Lesser’s speech, the Las Vegas Academy Theatre is putting on a play called “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.”

Director Melissa Lilly said the play is based on the true story of an art teacher named Raja Englanderova, who was sent to a concentration camp and survived through art. She said lead actress Rebecca Carrol contacted Lesser and asked him to come speak to the cast.

Junior Sarah Niederman said she met Lesser after winning an essay contest in middle school. She said Lesser’s message and appearance is important to students because there aren’t many Holocaust survivors left.

“We are the last generation and soon there will only be newsreels and books,” Niederman said. She said that technology will not be able to replace the feeling everyone in the room felt during Lesser’s speech.

“I Never Saw Another Butterfly” will premiere on Oct. 8 at the Las Vegas Academy Black Box Theatre, 315 South 7th St., with an admission of $10.

Vegas Diaries: Up To Speed

Hey everyone!
Sorry I haven’t written anything in a while. I’ve just been so busy with work and school that I haven’t had the chance to. I do have some good news, though.

Last Friday, I covered a majority of the Sept. 11 events happening in the area and my story actually made centerpiece on the Web site. I didn’t get to see it because I was running around all day, but my boss Tim took a screen shot for me.

The weekend went well, although I was a little bored. I have got to get out and make some friends in this place.

On Sunday I drove to Phoenix, Arizona to watch the Phoenix Mercury play the L.A. Sparks. It was amazing! When I moved to Las Vegas I knew I would be in between the two states that host my two favorite teams in the WNBA. I thought I was going to have to pick one of the other, but turns out I was lucky. Too bad Diana Taurasi didn’t play. Stupid playoffs. Anyway, I have pictures that I will be sure to post. ☺ Oh, did I mention I almost got an autograph from Candace Parker? If I had worn my orange and represented then maybe I would have an autograph right now. I blame Richard lol.

Monday was an OK day. I covered a court hearing and got lost in the Justice Center. I guess that’s bound to happen your first time, especially when there are 17 floors. Here is a link to my story for the Las Vegas Sun.

The day got better and by Monday night I had forgotten all about my troubles at the Justice Center. I covered an open forum at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada held by the Secretary of State Ross Miller. The forum was to educate same-sex and heterosexual couples about the new domestic partnership bill.

I learned a lot about Nevada last night. Certain companies refuse to give health insurance to domestic partners and adoption is still an issue. In Tennessee, being gay is still the biggest obstacle. I stood listening to all the panelists and political figures speak, and it saddened me to know that Tennessee has a long way to go before it ever reaches that point.

Tuesday was definitely a better day. I woke up this morning and traveled to the Henderson Justice Center to cover a preliminary hearing for a 19-year-old woman who is accused of suffocating her newborn son. The hearing was the last thing on the calendar, but I really didn’t mind waiting. In fact, I really like covering court cases.

After waiting three hours, the hearing was continued to Oct. 21 because the autopsy report was not completed. The continuance was a disappointment for some reporters but we eventually got all of our interviews with the prosecuting attorneys. I also spoke with the woman’s Public Defender Andrea Luem.

Sept. 5

After a long road trip through seven states, I finally arrived in Las Vegas last night. I’ve never been to Las Vegas, but so far it’s pretty nice. The people are kind, the scenery is beautiful and the weather is bearable.

Last night, a friend and his family showed me around Henderson and Green Valley Parkway. We went to dinner at the Claim Jumper, took a look at the Las Vegas Sun office building and drove around near the strip.

On television the strip seems like a huge tourist spot, actually the entire area of Las Vegas seems monstrous, but really Las Vegas is an average size city in a valley. The land is so flat that you can see the strip from miles away, especially at night when all the casinos are lit up.

The family also helped me look at a few apartment complexes. Luckily, I won’t be staying in an extended stay hotel the entire trip because I found a one-bedroom apartment today. It’s in a nice neighborhood and located off Boulder Highway, which is roughly 15-20 minutes from the Las Vegas Sun office.

I also learned a few things about Vegas that some people may not know. Everything is open 24/7 here, brothels and prostitution aren’t legal, despite what many people think and U-Turns are legal on many streets.

I move into the apartment tomorrow and start work on Tuesday. I’ll keep everyone updated after I get settled in more.

Fear and Living in Las Vegas

I never post anything personal on my blog, but I'm going to take an entry to do so. A few days ago I received an internship in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Las Vegas Sun. It's an incredible opportunity that I'm stoked about.

There are so many diverse people and stories just waiting to be told in Vegas. However, I'm a little nervous at the moment as to where I'm going to live. It seems staying four months has put me in a bind when it comes to apartment leases. Everywhere I call, the landlord wants a six-month lease and that's just not possible right now.

I found a few places that allow three-month leases, but seem to have a bit of a bug problem. It's a little unsettling when a landlord says "Everyone has bugs. I just don't let me kids eat anywhere except for the kitchen counter."

I think I'll pass.

Another option I came across was a room for rent with two complete strangers. I actually thought about calling but remembered my horror movie knowledge. Moving in with strangers could be a slasher film waiting to happen.

After 20 different phone calls, I came across an apartment complex I really liked. It's called Sunset Winds and looks really clean and safe. Then I noticed the amount for a one bedroom – $710, excluding utilities.

I leave for Las Vegas Wednesday morning. Until then, I have four days to decide where I'm going to live. Things are getting stressful, but it's going to be an amazing journey. I will post updates as much as I can along the way. :)

Teen cries blood

A family in desperate need of a diagnosis.

WKRN.com reported that an east Tennessee teen and his family is dealing with a medical mystery.

Calvino Inman, 15, is an average teenager residing in Rockwood, Tenn. Then again, average might not be the appropriate word since Inman cries blood.

Inman said his eyes start bleeding at least three times a day and it can last from a few minutes to up to an hour.

"Sometimes, I can feel it coming up, like a tear," Inman said. "I feel my eyes watering; sometimes it will burn as it comes out."

Inman said he's been called "possessed" by most of his friends.

"I guess I'm used to it now," Inman said to WATE-TV in Knoxville, Tenn. "At first, it kind of hurt my feelings."

Now Inman's family is making a desperate plea for help. Inman's mother, Tammy Mynatt, said she has taken her son to several specialists but still has no diagnosis and no treatment.

"The scariest thing in my life is when he looked at me and said 'Mom, am I going to die?' That right there broke my heart," Mynatt said. "Every doctor tells us they've never seen anything like this before in all their many years of being a doctor."

Mynatt said she is running out of hope and wants somebody to say they've seen this and can help.

Police officer suspended for sleeping on the job

Paul Morgan called Murfreesboro Police and complained that neighbors were shooting fireworks off at his house. When Officer Michelle Ratleph arrived, Morgan forgot about the fireworks and began to worry about Ratleph's alertness.

WSMV.com reported that Morgan said Ratleph began to drift off to sleep while filling out the report.

"[I] started looking at her, concentrating on her face and I could see that her eyes were closed," Morgan said. "It was obvious she was going asleep."

Morgan was so stunned at Ratleph's condition that he pulled out his cell phone and began taking video of her sleeping.

"I counted about 14 times that she dozed off and fell asleep," Morgan said.

In the video, Morgan's wife tried to wake Ratleph several times by turning up the volume on the television, but after Ratleph kept drifting in and out of consciousness, Morgan called her supervisors.

"I felt like I was having to call the police on the police," he said. "I was really concerned with her driving, concerned with her safety and the safety of others."

Ratleph's supervisors agreed and wrote Channel 4, saying "she did herself and the department a disservice if she hurt herself or someone else."

Morgan said Ratleph told him she had worked long hours the day before and was working overtime on that day. The Murfreesboro Police Spokesman Kyle Evans disagreed.

"This is an isolated situation," Evans said. "We think this officer has some type of possible medical issue or maybe didn't get enough sleep the night before she came to work."

Evans said the Murfreesboro Police Department is not understaffed and officers typically only work eight-hour shifts.

Ratleph apologized in the written report and said "it is by no means intentional." As to whether or not Ratleph has a medical condition, the police department couldn't comment.

The Murfreesboro Police Department have suspended Ratleph for seven days without pay. Ratleph will also be under probation for six months.

Canadian University adds "FD" to grading scale

Students know the letter grade "F" means fail, but what about "FD?"

CTVBC.com reported that Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada is taking punishment to a whole new level by adopting a new grade of "FD," which means failure with dishonesty. This is now the worst possible grade a student can receive.

Rob Gordon, director of criminology at SFU and acting chair of the senate committee on academic integrity, said the new grading is intended to curtail cheating using the Internet.

"What used to be a lot of cheating in libraries has changed quite significantly," Gordon said. "We now have to be concerned about cheating during exams with high-tech devices and the inappropriate use of Internet sources and downloading, including online companies offering services to students that promote academic dishonesty."

Department chairs can impose the "FD" grade if they feel the incident warrants a severe penalty.

Gordon said the new grade will only be used in cases of dishonesty.

The grade has yet to be used in its introductory semester, however, it will stay on the student's transcripts for two years after graduation.

Some students say it's unfair to carry the stigma of the grade into the working world.

"Two years loss of your life is a bit too far," said Olid Amid, Simon Fraser student.

However, some students said they feel the grade will finally hold cheaters accountable for their actions.

Student John Aubrey said the grade "makes it a lot easier for those of us who don't cheat to get good grades and to not worry about the people who are cheating."

Even though this grading system is fairly new, other universities have already began implementing its own system. The University of Alberta gives cheaters an "F8" or "F9," which is reduced to an "F" after three years.

"In our case, we give the students a chance to redeem themselves," Dean of Students Frank Robinson said. "[In] three years they can graduate and have a clean record and get on with life."

I have never been a fan of cheating, which is why I agree with this grading system. There is no excuse for plagiarism or being too lazy to study. If you're in college, then it's time to study. You knew going into it that it wasn't all fun and games.

This grading system should be considered in the United States, especially with all the new technology that makes it easier for students to cheat. However, cheating is a choice and if you make that choice then an "FD" is what you should receive.

Police bust Tennessee family-run prostitution ring

Prostitution is something more common in big cities, but Metro Police detectives and FBI agents busted a family-run prostitution ring in Murfreesboro, Tenn. today.

The ring was run by Teresa Ann West, 45, her son Casey, 20, and daughter Diana, 22. Police said the trio have been using underage teenagers from Middle Tennessee high schools as prostitutes.

After receiving information earlier this year, police began conducting surveillance at a Murfreesboro Motel 6 in early August.

As of now, Metro's Specialized Investigations Division and the FBI have only accused the trio of using one 16-year-old high school girl to perform sexual acts, however, other underage victims are believed to be involved.

Police finally got their chance to question Teresa West after setting up surveillance at a Motel 6 on Chaffin Place. The DNJ.com reported that officers watched West leave a room key card on a wall in the parking lot and leave the area.

A little later, a 16-year-old girl drove to the motel and went into West's room, using the key card. Metro detectives and FBI agents then entered the room and interviewed the 16-year-old girl. The girl said she had had sex for money at the direction of Teresa West about 20 to 30 times this summer.

The victim said that clients usually paid $110 and she gave West $40. She said West knew she was underage but told her to tell people she was 18 if anyone asked.

Teresa Ann West is charged in state court with trafficking for sexual servitude and promoting prostitution. She is also charged in federal court, along with her son, Casey, 20 and daughter Diana, 22, with using a minor for commercial sex.

Casey West is alleged to have driven the teenager to a client and received a $20 fee from her. The girl said she has given money to Casey West on other occasions as well. Diana West, 22, is alleged to have assisted in the operation of the prostitution business.

Parents of teenagers, particularly in the Robertson County area, who are or were friends with Casey, Diana or Teresa West, are urged to talk with their children and inquire whether they have any knowledge regarding the prostitution business.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Metro SID Detective Chad Holman at 615-782-3301. Underage persons involved in this matter are considered to be victims.

Florida man spends three months in jail for possession of breath mints

Donald May is suing the Kissimmee, Fla. Police Department for his arrest over breath mints that were thought to be crack.

May was originally pulled over for an expired tag, but police officers thought the mints were an illegal substance and arrested May.

WFTV.com reported that May told Eyewitness News that police wouldn't let him out of jail for three months until the tests proved the mints were candy.

May said he was just driving home from work when an officer pulled him over. He said when the officer walked up to him, the officer noticed something white in his mouth.

"He took them out of my mouth and put them in a baggy and locked me up [for] possession of cocaine and tampering with evidence," May said.

The officer said he field-tested the evidence and it tested positive for drugs. He said he saw May buying drugs while he was stopped at an intersection. In the police report, the officer said May admitted to buying drugs. May said that never happened.

"My client never admitted he purchased crack cocaine," said Attorney Adam Sudbury. "Why would he say that?"

Regardless, May spent the next three months in a jail because he was unable to pay his bond. He was released when he received a letter from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney's Office that test results showed no drugs were found.

"While I was sitting in jail I lost my apartment," May said. "I lost everything."

WFTV.com reported that while May was behind bars, the Kissimmee Police Department towed his car and auctioned it off.

May said he also lost his job and was evicted. Now he is suing the city for false arrest and false imprisonment. He wants to be compensated for the loss of his car and job. May's attorney and the city of Kissimmee discussed a possible settlement last year, but failed to reach an agreement.

Lady Vol recovers after brain surgery

Lady Vols forward Amber Gray, 19, is now in recovery after undergoing surgery for a brain aneurysm. She walks with a limp, her left eyelid droops almost shut as a lingering effect of a stroke, and her left arm is in a sling. However, she said she is determined to play basketball again for the Lady Vols.

"I'm not sure of the timetable ... but I definitely will play again," she said Monday as she prepared to leave a long-term rehabilitation facility to continue her recovery at home in nearby Mason. "As soon as they say I can go out on the court, I'm getting out there.

"I'm still working on my walking," she said. "I do eyebrow raisers every day."

Unfortunately, Gray will not be able to play this year, but The Associated Press reported that she did play in 27 games her freshman year. Gray was also voted the top girls prep basketball player in Ohio a year ago and was recruited by all the top college programs.

Doctors first discovered the brain aneurysm after Gray had shoulder surgery in July. She then underwent a 12 1/2-hour procedure that may have saved her life.

The Associated Press reported that Dr. Mark Goddard helped oversee Gray's rehab at Cincinnati's Drake Center. He said it was lucky the aneurysm showed up while Gray was hospitalized.

"Whether you call it serendipity or divine providence, they noticed that something wasn't right," Goddard said. "She probably had this all along, but people don't generally notice it until their '30s and '40s."

Goddard said Gray had successful rotator cuff surgery on July 2 in Knoxville, Tenn., and the aneurysm was unrelated. Goddard said that within hours of surgery, Gray's lungs filled with fluid and doctors performed more tests to get to the root of the problem.

The doctors spent days searching for the cause of the stroke. Finally, a broken blood vessel showed up. During this time, Gray was transferred to University Hospital Cincinnati for neurosurgery. She was then transferred to the rehabilitation center on July 23.

"Amber's strong will, positive attitude and determination, coupled with the excellent work of her medical team, has allowed for her release 2½ weeks ahead of schedule," Tennessee coach Pat Summitt said. "The Lady Vol basketball family continues to keep Amber in our constant thoughts and prayers.

"We know she will approach the next phase of her rehabilitation with the same strong will, determination and intensity."

Gray's mother, Tonya Carter, said she was afraid that her daughter might never wake up again.

"I've always known that she was a strong person, but she was amazingly strong," Carter said.

Gray said she expects to return to classes at the University of Tennessee in January.

California student faces 10 years in jail after altering video game consoles

Matthew Lloyd Crippen is a student at California State University at Fullerton, who was arrested Monday on charges that he illegally modified Xbox, Wii, Playstation and other game consoles to play pirated video games.

NBC.com reported that the 27-year-old was taken into custody Monday morning by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. This arrest follows his indictment by a federal grand jury on two counts of violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Crippen is accused of modifying the video game consoles for personal financial gain. Each criminal count such as this, carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, NBC.com reported.

It turns out that the ICE have been investigating Crippen ever since last year when they received a tip from the Entertainment Software Association. The ICE seized Crippen's home last May and found a dozen Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony video game consoles.

Robert Schoch, special agent in charge of the ICE investigations office in Los Angeles, said "piracy and counterfeiting violations not only cost U.S. businesses jobs and billions of dollars a year in lost revenue, they can also pose significant health and safety risks to consumers."

“Playing with games in this way is not a game -- it is criminal,” Schoch said.

The ICE said that counterfeiting and piracy have grown in recent years. As of now, counterfeiting and piracy cost the U.S. economy $250 billion a year, which equals a total of 750,000 American jobs.

NBC.com reported that some estimates even indicate that 5 percent to 8 percent of all the goods sold worldwide are counterfeit.

Crippen was expected to make his initial federal court appearance late Monday in Los Angeles.

So does this mean that pirated video games have replaced the worry of sharing and downloading music? Are people like Crippen "fixing" games across the country to fit their personal needs? If so, does the company resemble anything like Shawn Fanning's business, Napster?

All of these are questions ran through my head while reading this and the whole music downloading and sharing debacle got me thinking about copyright law and piracy.

Napster allowed people to download music for free and share it with their friends. Moguls in the record company heard about the system and witnessed their paychecks being cut in half. Why buy music when you can get it for free? Outraged, artists came together and accused Napster of taking music and selling it for free without consent.

The Recording Industry Association of America sued Fanning's company for copyright infringement. While Napster users may have thought they were doing nothing wrong, the fact was that they were stealing someone else's copyrighted material. Fanning could not claim fair use either because the value and potential market of the original works were being affected.

I wonder if Crippen's case is common and happening around the country. The music industry cracked down on Napster to where the company is only allowed to "sell" music – not distribute it for free. Will the video game industry do the same when it comes to pirating games and modifying consoles? Only time will tell.

John Hughes dies of heart attack

It's a sad day in the movie business. Writer and director John Hughes died today of a heart attack while taking a walk in Manhattan. He was 59.

Fans might know Hughes' work as the master of '80s teen movies such as "The Breakfast Club" and "Sixteen Candles," but he also continued directing and even worked on "Home Alone" in the '90s.

Variety.com said that Hughes retired from directing in 1991, but continued to write and inspire other filmmakers. Both Kevin Smith and Judd Apatow have said they grew up with Hughes' films.

In fact, Apatow told The L.A. Times last year that his stuff "is just John Hughes films with four-letter words."

"I feel like a part of my childhood has died," Apatow said. "Nobody made me laugh harder or more often than John Hughes."

It's true. Hughes had a special way of relating to young people, and it's something most filmmakers are unable to tap into.

Summer Movies Throw Down at Box Office

Summertime usually translates into no homework, no pesky responsibilities or stress. However, summer also means that new movies are released. Which summer blockbuster is your favorite? Take the poll on the sidebar---------------->

For this week's show, I wanted to talk about some of the new movies that I've already seen and some of the movies that will open this Friday.

The Harry Potter series has been a worldwide phenomenon, and the movies have generated millions of dollars. But the new film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Princ e " has brought in the lowest revenue of all the Harry Potter films, including "The Prisoner of Azkaban."

Box Office Mojo reported that the film has only generated $637,920,753 worldwide. Yes, this is a great deal of money, but the film cost $250 million to make, which is largest amount for any Harry Potter movie. The low revenue is also shocking because this film was shown in 4,325 theaters – more than any of the other films.

I wonder if the problem stems from the disappointment from "Harry Potter and Order of the Phoenix?" Or perhaps the Harry Potter generation has grown up and would rather spend their money on movies like "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "Fast & Furious." Although, I don't know why.
This brings me to the next summer hit, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." I haven't seen this film so I can't say whether it's a waste of money or not, but I have heard it's not a family film. With unnecessary foul language in dialogue, children will have to repeatedly cover their ears. Careful Michael Bay, you don't want to lose a big part of your audience.

However, I don't think Bay was worried about losing the toddler audience since the movie grossed $201 million in the first five days, Hollywood Insider reported. The movie is still going strong and has become China's biggest box office hit ever, after grossing 400 million China yuans.

Stepping away from action and fantasy, "The Ugly Truth" debuted last weekend and has grossed $38,454,189 worldwide so far. The film stars Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler and is unlike any romantic comedy I've ever seen.

The film has an R rating for some offensive language and sexual references, however, it is definitely worth seeing. The script is fantastic and will keep audiences guessing throughout the entire film as to what Gerard Butler is going to say next. Katherine Heigl's character also musters up some laughs during her "orgasmic" dinner with Butler's character Mike.

The last movie I would like to talk about is "Funny People." With an all-star cast and director Judd Apatow behind the camera, "Funny People" looks like another fresh summer comedy. But I'm not quite sure what to make of the movie's plot?

Ever since "The 40-year-old Virgin" became a hit movie in 2005, the former cast members and producer of "Freaks and Geeks" have done no wrong. Releasing movie after movie with quirky characters and hilarious dialogue, Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen have made a name for themselves in Hollywood.

But how long can they keep this streak up? Secretly, I'm waiting for one of their movies to tank, but after having seen all of them I'm still satisfied with the creativity each one displays. I'm really hoping that "Funny People" won't be the film that bombs at the box office, especially if I actually get around to see it in a theater.

Diana Taurasi's court date postponed

Diana Taurasi's court date was originally scheduled for July 22, but East Valley Tribune.com reported that the date has been postponed until Aug. 21.

East Valley Tribune.com said Taurasi was scheduled to appear in Phoenix Municipal Court on Wednesday, but attorneys agreed to a continuation.

As of now, Taurasi has been suspended for two games by the Mercury "for conduct detrimental to the team." She missed last Saturday's game against Detroit Shock and sat out Wednesday night's game against Minnesota.

Taurasi originally thought she might miss out on the All-Star Game altogether, but to her surprise she was chosen as a reserve for the 2009 Western Conference All-Stars. The bad news is that mandatory sentencing for extreme DUI is 10-30 days in jail.

The future is unknown for this talented athlete, but I'll do my best to keep fans updated on the situation.

Phoenix Mercury star faces DUI charges

Forward-guard Diana Taurasi is facing three DUI charges after she was pulled over on July 2 for speeding.

ESPN Associated Press reported that a Phoenix police report released earlier this week shows Taurasi's blood-alcohol level was 0.17 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent in Arizona.

Prior to this, Taurasi had scored 22 points in a matchup against the Seattle Storm. A few hours later around 2:30 a.m., Taurasi found herself being questioned by police.

Taurasi is pleading not guilty to the DUI charges and not responsible to the speeding citation.

The police officer who stopped Taurasi said the 27-year-old was driving nearly 20 mph over the 35 mph speed limit.

"We're aware of the recent reports in regards to the situation with Diana Taurasi," the Mercury said in a statement. "Our organization takes these matters very seriously. We have discussed the matter internally and determined that until all the facts are known to us, it would be inappropriate to announce a particular course of action."

Averaging 20 points per game, the WNBA's leading scorer might also miss out on a chance to play in the All-Star Game. ESPN blogger Mechelle Voepel said Taurasi has not been voted in for the All-Star Game as a starter, however, Taurasi could still be chosen as a reserve.

While Taurasi's career might have hit a rough patch, her freedom is still in question. Will she serve time in jail? How long will she be suspended from the league? All of these questions might not be answered right away, but Taurasi will appear in court on July 22.

My mother was the first person to tell me about Taurasi's DUI's, and I couldn't believe it. I'm a huge supporter of the WNBA and Diana Taurasi. The thought of her committing such a dangerous and reckless act seemed impossible, but then I remembered she is human.

Taurasi made a huge mistake. Monumental, astronomical even. She could have killed herself or someone else on the road. It was stupid and she should have known better.

My last blog entry dealt with drinking and driving. I included a death clock to give readers a sense of many people die in a hour, day or even a week. Taurasi could have easily been one of those fatalities. Or worse, she could have killed an innocent bystander.

I give no sympathy for her actions, but I do think this might have been a wake up call for the young star. She's not the first athlete in the WNBA to receive a DUI, but I think it's a bigger deal for more people because she is a prominent face for the league.

Many NBA athletes have received DUI's and face the consequences, but I think the WNBA might be held to a higher standard because the athletes are female. When the first brawl broke out between the Detroit Shock and L.A. Sparks last year, everyone seemed to be so shocked because these females athletes were acting like the male athletes.

My point is not to get off on a feminist point of view, I'm just simply saying that Taurasi is human. She shouldn't be scrutinized because she's a female athlete. She should be scrutinized because she did something really dumb.

Austin Burton, DIME blogger, said it best when he said "When it comes to off-court behavior, however, [WNBA slogan] “Expect Great” apparently translates to “Expect Perfection.”

Cop tells teen to drive drunk

After having a little too much to drink at a Dave Matthews Band concert south of Milwaukee, 19-year-old Travis Peterson decided to sleep in his car rather than attempt to drive.

Yahoo News reported that Peterson said he was awoken by a state trooper who ordered him to leave because the lot was being cleared. Peterson obliged and began driving home. Once out of the parking lot, he was arrested for drinking and driving.

Peterson was found guilty and ordered to spend 60 days in jail.

On Wednesday, a Wisconsin appeals court commended Peterson for trying to be responsible and sleeping instead of driving. Yahoo News also reported that appeals trial court was wrong for not letting Peterson argue that police entrapped him.

During the trial, the state argued that people who choose to drink too much can't argue they've been entrapped when arrested for drunk driving.

The 2nd District Court of Appeals disagreed and said "drinking alcohol to excess, while inadvisable and unhealthy, is not unlawful by itself."

While this argument holds strong, the court forgot to mention that Peterson was underage. Peterson's attorney, Andrew Mishlove said Peterson's age was irrelevant.

There are several issues to address in this case, but the fact that a state trooper would actually order a teen to drive drunk just so a parking lot can be cleared is absurd.

In 2006, Illinois had 540 alcohol-related fatalities, Alcohol Alert.com said. Illinois is also in the top five states to have the highest number of alcohol-related fatalities in 2006. Wisconsin had 352 alcohol-related fatalities in 2006.

Above is a death clock that reads 7,002 deaths from drunk driving so far this year. This number I have addressed is subject to change.

Learn About Alcohol.com reports that eight teens die every day due to drunk driving. Also, 60 percent of teen deaths in car accidents are alcohol related.

These statistics may be scary but they are real. I doubt law enforcement officers are unaware of these numbers, so why would a state trooper encourage someone to get behind the wheel, especially after that person admitted they have had one too many drinks?

It doesn't add up to me. Plus, I wonder if the cop that ordered the boy to drive is the same cop who arrested him. Or maybe he called in a patrol buddy a few miles away and told the officer to follow Peterson. Then again, Peterson was drunk and could have been swerving on the road.

Instead of ordering Peterson to move his car from the parking lot, the officer should have offered him a ride home. I'm not saying that I condone teenage drinking, but this seems like a obvious solution to this entire problem.

While I think the police officer acted irresponsible, I think Peterson is at fault as well. He should have been escorted home and received an underage drinking citation.

Pantagraph.com reported that Illinois State Police said that their officers had issued 3,315 citations for underage drinking in 2006.

It seems teens aren't taking the citations seriously, therefore, the Illinois House of Representatives is trying to pass a bill that will suspend a teen's license for three months if he/she is caught drinking. The odd part of this bill is that it also applies to teens who might not be behind the wheel. The resolution of this legislation is unknown at this time.

Peterson will be spending 60 days in jail instead of paying a fine. It's a big difference and the state trooper should have been willing to drive him home instead of letting him endanger other drivers on the road.

I'd also like to mention that the death clock above now reads 7,003. In the hour it took me to write this blog, another person has died because of drinking and driving. This is a crucial issue that needs to be taken more seriously.

Woman sentenced after husband dies during sex game

Today, a judge sentenced a Columbia, Tenn. woman to 18 months in jail after her husband died of suffocation during bondage sex.

In April 2008, The Daily Herald of Columbia reported that Rebecca Bargy, 26, left her husband James Bargy, 29, tied up for 20 hours while she was with another man she met on the Internet. She tied up her husband and gagged him to fulfill a sexual fantasy. A medical examiner later confirmed that James Bargy died from suffocation.

Bargy was convicted on May 20 of negligent homicide and will serve her sentence in the Maury County Jail.

When I first heard about this story, the cause of death really didn't shock me, however, the location did. I guess I have a mindset that bondage sex isn't common among Tennesseans, but maybe it is.

My reporter instincts also kicked in and I began to wonder how a journalist should handle this type of situation. I've taken a journalism ethics class before and recall talking about certain cases such as this one. Do you reveal the cause of death or leave it out to prevent others from trying this kind of act?

I say leave it in. As a journalist, your role is to report the facts, and if a man or woman dies from autoerotic asphyxia or bondage sex then report it. The public has a right to know.

Personally, I don't buy into the whole fear of people trying something because you printed it. People are already trying risky sex games and dying from them, so what is so scary about reporting the truth?

Of course, a journalist might not be willing to print the cause of death out of respect for family members. You can't libel a dead person, but what you write may embarrass living relatives. It may sound cruel but I can't care about that. My main priority is to report the facts.

If a family is upset about a publication printing a cause of death that is shameful then perhaps the person who committed it should have thought about that ahead of time.

Even though I feel this way about this particular case, ethics is a gray area. It's up to publications or the individual reporter to decide the best course of action to take.

Heterosexual Iraq War Veteran repeals "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

U.S. Rep. and Iraq War Veteran Patrick Murphy is taking a stand against the "don't ask, don't tell" law for lesbians and gays in the military.

Murphy is a heterosexual former soldier, who is trying to gain support from small communities by speaking openly about sexual orientation and why it doesn't matter to a majority of soldiers.

"They could be on the ground right now in Iraq . . . producing vital intelligence that would help us win the war on terror," Murphy said in a Philadelphia Inquirer article. "When I was in Iraq . . . my men did not care if you were gay or straight; they just wanted to get the mission done and come home alive."

Even though Murphy said that a majority of the military does not care about sexual orientation, a 2006 Military Times poll showed that 58 percent of active-duty personnel support keeping "don't ask, don't tell."

Tommy Sears, executive director for the Center for Military Readiness, said that Murphy is "in a pretty serious minority as far as military people go."

Former President Bill Clinton first enacted the "don't ask, don't tell" law in 1993. Since then, the Philadelphia Inquirer said the law has led to the discharge of nearly 13,000 gay service members.

After running an avid campaign supporting the LGBT community, Clinton felt under pressure to pass a law that would expand gay rights, especially in the military.

Current President Barack Obama did the same thing, but has yet to follow through. In Obama's first few months as president, more than 100 soldiers were discharged because of their sexual orientation, CNN.com reported.

And of the 13,000 service members, 58 Arabic speakers have been discharged since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Murphy said he has always been against the law and is going to meet with legislators in the coming weeks to find needed votes. Other heterosexual soldiers are also banning together to gain support. CNN.com said that a "Voices of Honor" tour, sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, will travel across the country to share stories of gay, lesbian and straight servicemen and women to gather support for the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, which would repeal "don't ask, don't tell."

The Philadelphia Inquirer said the legislation to repeal "don't ask, don't tell" was first introduced in 2005 and is still in subcommittee. The bill may not come up for a House of Representatives vote this year, but it currently has 151 cosponsors.

The "don't ask, don't tell" law has been in effect for more than a decade, which is ridiculous. Even though some may view homosexuality as a sin, the military shouldn't treat people like plagues. In fact, they should be proud to have so many men and women willing to serve their country.

Controversy over gay rights always stems from religion, but what our government needs to remember is that there is a separation of church and state doctrine that clearly says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

Bottom line: Soldiers of any race, gender or sexual orientation should be given equal rights in the military.

Newspapers ask college journalists for help

Newspapers across the country might be laying off staff members and cutting salaries, but young journalists graduating from college still have a chance in the industry thanks to technology.

With new technology and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, editors have found themselves asking younger journalists for advice on how to use these tools on the Internet.

ABCNEWS.com recently reported on a group of undergraduate and graduate journalism students at West Virginia University , who have been working with several small newspapers and training editors how to use the Internet, high-definition cameras and video editing software.

The idea arose when two students approached the school's interim assistant dean, John Temple. Temple said the idea evolved into the "Uncovered Project," but originally started as a way to show editors multimedia being taught at the university.

As a trade off, students will be able to receive experience and learn how a community newspaper operates.

"It's good for everyone to learn more about their state," said Kendal Montgomery, a West Virginia University graduate. "To get in there... to focus on community journalism with these small newspapers... people depend on them."

Community newspapers are extremely important because without them, who would cover local events or news that bigger media outlets consider inferior? However, community papers tend to be short staffed, which makes it difficult to report on numerous stories using alternate story telling techniques.

But this could be a good thing for graduating journalism seniors who are looking for jobs. My advice is to apply to a community paper and gain some experience in covering a small town. It might not be your dream job, but at least it pays and you will be working.

More advice: Learn all you can when it comes to the Internet, Google, using a camera (even a handheld Flip camera), photography and familiarize yourself with diverse ways to use Facebook and Twitter for reporting and sharing information.

Some of the "Uncovered Project" stories include features about pregnant inmates at a federal institution, a camouflage-themed wedding and a wildlife tour on a historic locomotive.

Memphis Police Officer Receives Life Sentence Plus 255 Years

Today, Chief Judge Jon P. McCalla sentenced Arthur Sease IV, former Memphis police officer, to a prison term of life, plus 255 years.

Marketwatch.com said Sease was found guilty of 44 counts of civil rights, narcotics, robbery and firearm offenses.

My Harrison, special agent in charge of FBI's Memphis Field Office, said that Sease's sentence is one of the longest ever imposed for civil rights violations, which did not involve a victim's death.

"This sentencing sends a serious message that police misconduct will not be tolerated and will be dealt with harshly by our courts," said Larry Godwin, Memphis police director.

Memphis CommercialAppeal.com said that Sease began stealing money and drugs from dealers to help pay for his dream of becoming a record producer. But after a few thefts, Sease became greedy and even stole $32,000 in one stop.

While Sease received a long and extended punishment for his crimes, he did not act alone. Marketwatch.com reported that Sease conspired with other members of the Memphis Police Department. Apparently, Sease and other officers used power and authority to rob people of drugs and then sell them on the side to earn a profit. Sease committed or was involved in 15 separate robberies.

Perhaps Sease received one of the longest sentences because he was the last one to confess. It has been reported that five other police officers confessed. Andrew Hunt was sentenced in February 2009 to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty in September 2006 to a federal civil rights conspiracy, robbery and drug distribution.

Antoine Owens pleaded guilty in August 2007 and received a prison sentence of 63 months and three years of supervised release in March 2009.

Alexander Johnson pleaded guilty in April 2007 and served 30 months in prison before being released in March 2009. He will be supervised for two years.

In September 2007, civilian Laterrica Woods confessed to helping Sease and Hunt with a robbery. Woods also pleaded guilty to a civil rights conspiracy, and received 36 months imprisonment. Woods was released in April 2009 and will be supervised for the next three years.

Harold McCall, former Memphis police officer, pleaded guilty to a civil rights conspiracy in May 2007. McCall received a sentence of three years probation, including one year of home confinement in June 2009.

It sounds like these police officers received a fair and reasonable punishment. All of the officers brought this on themselves. It's hard to claim ignorance or peer pressure when you work for a department that promises to uphold the law and seek justice.

As for the 255 years, I find it quite humorous. Even after Sease is dead, he will still be serving out his sentence. I know that might sound harsh but imagining all the cruel and vicious acts he committed, makes me think of a quote from "The Craft."

Michael Jackson dies at 50

On Thursday, The L.A. Times reported that pop icon Michael Jackson went into cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles mansion.

The L.A. Times said paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after receiving a phone call around 12:30 p.m. Paramedics found Jackson unconscious and not breathing. After trying to resuscitate him for more than 40 minutes, paramedics rushed Jackson to UCLA hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on June 26 to find out the cause of death. More updates will follow the autopsy.

Los Angeles police said that they don't believe Jackson was a victim of "foul play" or was taking any medications that could have caused his death.

The death of a well known and loved musician is always tough, but Michael Jackson was and will forever be the king of pop music.

Growing up, my mother was a huge fan of Elvis and I would always argue with her about how Michael Jackson was better because at least he was still alive. I feel bad for that argument now, but Michael Jackson's legacy will live on, as well as his music.

Several of his songs have touched my life, and it's crucial that these songs are passed down to younger generations to love and enjoy too. He has inspired so many artists and musicians and provided his fans with hit after hit.

Rest in peace Michael.

Woman wakes up with 56 stars tattoed on her face

Kimberley Vlaminck, 18, went into a tattoo parlor to get three stars tattooed around her left eye but woke up to find 56 stars covering the left side of her face.

Telegraph.co.uk said Vlaminck said she fell asleep during the procedure and didn't feel anything until tattoo artist Rouslan Toumaniantz began tattooing a star on her nose.

"I cannot go out on to the street," Vlaminck said. "I am so embarrassed.

"I just look ugly, a freak, mutilated."

After the incident, the Vlaminck family filed a lawsuit and are seeking 9,000 euros to pay for laser surgery to remove the tattoos.

Toumaniantz said Vlaminck was awake for the whole procedure and is counter suing for 50 euros for the 56 stars.

"I did not hypnotise or dope her, as they say, it was with agreement," Toumaniantz said. "No way could I have tattooed so many stars on her face against her will."

Toumaniantz also said that there was no problem until Vlaminck's father came into the parlor and saw the tattoos on his daughter's face.

Basically, you have the classic case of teenage rebellion. The daughter clearly knew what she was getting on her face, and when her father became outraged she blamed the tattoo artist instead of taking the heat.

How could she not feel the discomfort of more than a hundred little needles entering her skin? It's not possible unless she was drugged, which is still a possibility. However, if this is the case then why hasn't the family gotten a drug test to back up their story? It certainly would improve their chances in court, so why not?

My guess is that the daughter is hiding something. She's playing the victim because she hates the tattoo that she most likely agreed to. Now she wants it removed but doesn't have the funds, so playing the victim seems like an appropriate move.

Well, I don't buy it, and I'm hoping a judge doesn't either. Yes, it is possible to pass out during a tattoo, but I highly doubt the artist would be able to tattoo 56 stars on someone unconscious without someone else noticing.

On June 23, Mailonline.co.uk reported that Vlaminck admitted to lying about the tattoos.

All the predictions of this girl lying are true.

Mailonline.co.uk said Vlaminck told a Dutch TV crew that she asked for the 56 stars and initially adored them.

"But when my father saw them, he was furious," Vlaminck said. "So I said I fell asleep and that the tattoist had made a mistake."

Despite all the turmoil that Vlaminck put Toumaniantz through, the tattoo artist said he has agreed to help pay for some of the laser surgery to remove the tattoos. He said his reasoning behind it was that he feels like his client isn't satisfied.

Toumaniantz also said he has learned his lesson and will seek written consent next time before working on a tattoo.

Apple creates new x-rated iPhone App

The iPhone has already sealed its' place in history but it might be remembered for something else after its' new and free application called MyVibe.

MyVibe is the first x-rated app and vibrator approved by Apple, Current.com said.

The device has an on/off button that is easily controlled and lets the user determine the amount of vibration he or she wants.

The app is limited in vibration but is supposed to be used to spice things up between partners when they can't be together.

I refuse to believe that Apple didn't take into consideration that hormonal and sex-driven teenagers might indulge in this application. It's actually surprising that an app like this is even available, considering the censors the American government places on sex and porn.

Does this mean that the app will have an age limit placed on it? If so, what if parents buy an iPhone for their son or daughter and the account is in their name?

There are limitless questions when it comes to this app and how long it will actually stay on the market. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it, but I give it a month or so before Apple recalls it.

This whole idea seems similar to the Harry Potter vibrating broom stick, except Apple fully acknowledges that this app should be used for pleasure. Yeah, you don't see those broomsticks anymore, do you?

Why PETA Is Upset With Obama For Swatting At A Fly

Wednesday, President Barack Obama swatted away a fly during an interview with CNBC at the White House and caused a media frenzy in doing so.

Quickly, members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals jumped on the issue and criticized Obama for killing a living organism. MSNBC.com said that PETA will be sending Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.

It's kind of absurd that PETA would feel so strongly about the president swatting away a fly, but perhaps Obama really angered them when he killed the fly. After the fly landed on his hand, he waited patiently and then used his other hand to squish the creature.

"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."

As of now, the White House has no comment on the incident.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous because everyone has swatted at a fly. It's a natural reaction to block one's face when something is buzzing around it. Am I wrong?

Summer is in full swing and it's time for some pride, Nashville Pride that is.

The LGBT festival is celebrating 21 years of pride in a big way. It is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Riverfront Park in Nashville, Tenn. from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Entertainment will include musical artists such as Lady Bunny, Atomic Blonde and headliner Deborah Cox.

Even though the festival doesn't begin until Saturday, events have been occurring all week. On June 17, Daisy Rae Welch hosted Family Feud night at Tribe in Nashville. Outloud also screened the documentary "Before Stonewall."

On Thursday, author Lamar Ariel met with fans at Outloud to promote his new book "Ready To Male."

Friday, June 19 Play hosted a Riveter Rock Women' s Music Festival. As a pre-pride concert, Play welcomed Laura Hildebrandt to the stage at 11 p.m.

Pride events will continue through June 26 when comedian Lisa Lampanelli is scheduled to perform at Ryman Auditorium at 8 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be bought in advance or at the door.

All events are open to everyone, depending on age for certain venues.

Gender identity bill stirs debate in SGA

Student Government Association senator and vice president of MT Lambda, Brandon Thomas, recently proposed that SGA add "gender identity and expression" under Article 2, Section 2 of the SGA constitution.

As of now, the constitution has a non-discrimination policy for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students on campus, but hasn't recognized the basic rights of gender identity and expression.

Perhaps the problem is that many people are unaware of what gender identity is. Gender identity is how a person identifies him/herself when referring to gender. Also, gender identity isn't always directly linked to sexual orientation.

As discussions continue, a common response to this bill may revolve around the fact that there is already something in the constitution for LGBT students and adding gender identity and expression will only make the policy more "redundant."

I don't see how it will make anything redundant because being homosexual, bisexual or transgender is not the same as gender identity. Open minds and a dictionary might help representatives know the difference.

Every student deserves to be protected and not discriminated against. If a student is hassled about being gay and it starts to affect his/her education, the student has a policy to back up his/her case.

Right now gender identity students do not have that luxury.

SGA's responsibility is to represent the students and listen to ideas and suggestions they may have. The first introduction on the mtsu.edu/sga Web site even says that SGA is the voice for the student body. Therefore, if the student body wants equal rights for gender identity individuals then SGA representatives should take the time to understand the difference between gender identity and homosexuality before brushing it off and calling it "redundant."

If the bill passes through SGA twice then it will become a referendum that students will be able to vote on during Homecoming this fall.

This week's news topic is about a new book and documentary titled "Oral Sex Is The New Goodnight Kiss." The book and film are about female Canadian teens who trade sex for money, drugs and apparently homework. The overall consensus of the film is how oral sex has become more acceptable and isn't considered sex by teenagers.

However, the film also talks in depth about teen prostitution and how the girls becoming involved are from wealthy suburban homes. Apparently, children as young as 11 are turning to prostitution for money. But if these young girls are from rich households then why do they need to turn to prostitution? Things don't seem to add up here, so I'm guessing that they are seeking attention and a chance to be the most popular girl in school with the guys. Lame.

Some girls may take on the role of a prostitute, but others find themselves stepping into the shoes of a pimp. They call themselves girl recruiters. They become good friends with girls and then trade them to men for money and/or drugs.

Things sure have changed since I was in high school...

I chose to write about a Buddhist monk committing suicide on a street corner by lighting himself on fire. The monk was one of seven that did this in 1963 to protest against the South Vietnamese government banning the celebration of Buddha's birthday.

Death of March Madness

For the women's basketball NCAA tournament I was rooting for MTSU's Lady Raiders and Pat Summitt's Lady Vols, however, both teams were eliminated in the first round on Sunday.

No. 8 seed, MTSU took on No. 9 seed Michigan State on their home floor, and lost 60-59. During the majority of both halves, MTSU dominated. But towards the end, MTSU started to get lazy and depend on its star player Alysha Clark.

Clark had a hard enough time scoring against 6-foot-9-inch Allyssa DeHaan, who constantly denied Clark any entry into the basket. But when her teammates refused to step up and make big plays, Clark took it to the basket and fouled out with one minute to go in the game.

The last play rested on the shoulders of junior forward Brandi Brown, who lost control of the ball at the last second. It's sad to see the Lady Raiders eliminated before they were given a chance to showcase their talent.

Later that night another dream of mine was crushed. No. 5 seed Tennessee took on No. 12 Ball State and practically gave up their returning champion status with a 71-55 loss. For the past two years the Lady Vols have been the champions of the NCAA tournament, but from the beginning of this season fans knew it would be rough.

Fans didn't expect the freshman lineup to make a dent in Summitt's career by losing for the first time ever in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Sure, Ball State played well by shooting several 3-pointers, but the Tennessee defense was nonexistence. Ball State players would drive the lane with no orange standing in their way. The whole game was ridiculous.

Last year Angie Bjorklund had the pleasure of experiencing the glory of a champion, but this season she appears to be lost. Bjorklund doesn't even try to step up on the court and make plays unless she knows a 3-pointer is needed. The bad news is that when she realizes this, she doesn't care if the ball goes in the basket or not. It seems like this whole team has lost all motivation, and their carelessness is beginning to drive Lady Vols fans over the edge.

Oh well, looks like I'll be rooting for Maryland now. Hopefully they can beat UConn. Take that Maya Moore!

Lady Vols unable to tie score at end against LSU

The Lady Vols trailed the entire game against LSU and despite making a comeback, they were unable to tie the score with 7.9 seconds left on the game clock.

LSU's Katherine Graham made two free throws, bringing the score to 63-61. After the free throws, the Vols tried to get the ball down the court but freshman forward Glory Johnson got tied up under the goal, letting the seconds run down on the clock.

LSU's Allison Hightower led her team in scoring with 14 points, while sophomore guard Lady Vol Angie Bjorklund scored 21 points.

Lady Vols turnover win to No. 10 Duke in Knoxville

Getting off to a rocky start, both Duke and UT had a hard time hanging on to possessions and not throwing them away. However, Duke rounded out the game with 22 turnovers, which is 5 more than UT, and still came out on top with a 62-54 win in Knoxville Monday night.

The two teams squared off for rivalry week and depended on their point guards to do the dirty work. Briana Bass had 14 points and was 2-2 in 3-pointers, while Duke point guard Jasmine Thomas led her team with 19 points.

UT's defense was non existent tonight as they allowed blue jerseys into the paint constantly for easy layups. Thomas took advantage of this and had a few glass touching buckets herself.

Three point shooter Angie Bjorklund had a difficult time from the field tonight, going 2-13 from inside the arc and 1-7 outside. UT head coach Pat Summitt told Rebecca Lobo at half time that Bjorklund needed to step up and make some big plays for her team. Unfortunately, Bjorklund came up short in the second half and was completely silent in the first, except for a few passing turnovers.

Even though UT's experienced players struggled from the field, newcomer and freshman Kelley Cain had 10 points and 6 rebounds. This young lady has definitely taken the position of former Lady Vol Nikki Anosike, who now plays in the WNBA.

Rebounds also played a big part in Duke's success because they were grabbing both defensive and offensive boards through the first and second half. Duke ultimately had 49 and UT only had 36.

As the Lady Vols look to take on Kentucky on Thursday, turnovers and rebounding are going to be the main focus for coach Summitt and her team during these next few days of practice.

MTSU raise money for breast cancer in 'Pink Zone'

Middle Tennessee State University lady raiders women's basketball team defeated North Texas 113-58 in the Murphy Center on Sunday during 'Pink Zone.'

Junior forward Alysha Clark, who has now picked up her fifth Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honor, had 30 points alone against North Texas. Close behind, junior forward Brandi Brown had 21 points and was 6-9 from 3 point range.

However, sophomore forward Emily Queen only had 2 points after rolling her ankle and coming down on it wrong. Queen only played 16 minutes and will have to have an MRI to determine whether or not she can play on Wednesday against South Alabama.

From the beginning of the game until the final seconds, MT never let up. Head coach Rick Insell said that once his team gets into the feeling they can be pretty dangerous.

After the game was over the lady raiders auctioned off their jerseys to raise money for breast cancer research. Last year the team raised $18,000 and are expected to exceed that amount.

Lisa Leslie announces retirement after 2009 season

L.A. Sparks all-star Lisa Leslie, 36, has had many career achievements, including being the first female to ever dunk in the WNBA. She is a fantastic player and the No. 1 draft pick of the first WNBA draft.

Knowing all of her accomplishes and what she has brought to the game, it is hard for her fans to let her retire.

In 2008, I went to Atlanta, GA. to watch Leslie and Candace Parker take on the Atlanta Dream. Even after giving birth to a baby girl, Leslie didn't miss a beat. She was grabbing rebounds and allowing the ball to roll off her finger tips for shot after shot. It was an amazing game to watch.

One year later, Leslie announced that she will be retiring at the end of the 2009 season. While I imagine this is hard for Leslie, it must be incredibly difficult for the L.A. Sparks, who are going to be losing the best athlete in the WNBA.

With Leslie gone, the Sparks will most likely turn to second year Parker to fill her shoes. Parker was the first pick in the 2008 draft and was the first player to win both the MVP and Rookie of the Year Award.

Whatever the case, Leslie is the face for the Women's National Basketball Association and will continue to shine on with her career highlights and mind blowing achievements.

Vanderbilt defeats Georgia in 'Pink Zone'

Vanderbilt commodore fans were on their feet today cheering as the women's basketball team steamrolled Georgia with back-to-back baskets down the stretch and 9-20 3 pointers. Vandy won 80-64.

The theme Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tenn. today was "Pink Zone/Think Pink" to raise awareness and money for breast cancer.

Throughout the first half, there were a significant number of lead changes, and one tie, 24 up, with 2:36 to go. Vandy's Jessica Mooney definitely made the play for this team with an assist, steal and layup down the court that allowed Vanderbilt to take the lead. Vandy led by five points at halftime.

Starting out the second half, Georgia tried to come strong with a basket from Christy Marshall, but could not match the intensity of Vandy's Tuomi Hannah. Hannah ended up with 10 points.

Mooney only had 4 points but made the last two shots of the game on the foul line.

Lebron James to compete in 2010 dunk contest

Tonight I had the pleasure of watching Nate Robinson hang on the rim after completing an amazing dunk from the left corner.

Following this, Dwight Howard soared through the air and forced the basketball through the net. From a distance it looked like this man was flying.

Afterwards, both Robinson and Howard got together to do an impressive dunk. Howard put on a red Superman cape and stood in front of Robinson at the rim. Robinson ran from the half court mark and jumped over Howard for the dunk.

Lebron James, who was watching from the audience, announced tonight that he would be competing in the 2010 dunk championships.

No. 4 Dukes falls to No. 8 North Carolina

Without the talent of Lindsey Harding, Alison Bales and former head coach Gail Goestenkor, Duke seems to be struggling. Even though it still has the leadership of Abby Waner, who played alongside Harding and Bales, the team is lacking an important element.

Then again Duke is ranked No. 4 in the country this year, which is why fans have been scratching their heads wondering why they fell to No. 8 North Carolina on Monday in Chapel Hill.

When these two teams compete there is always rivalry, but it looks like Duke pretty much handed the win to the Tarheels. Chante Black, who has stepped into Bales shoes, led Duke with 13 points. Following her, Abby Waner and Jasmine Thomas had a collective total of 22 points.

On the other side of the court, Rashanda McCants had 22 points alone. And even though North Carolina led in rebounds with 4, the number for both teams was significantly low. I just hope that these new players can unite their teams together and start playing at a national level again.

Alysha Clark breaks MTSU scoring record

On Wednesday, Feb. 11 Junior forward Alysha Clark set the Middle Tennessee State University single game scoring record with 50 points against Troy.

Clark went 20 out of 28 under the basket, and 10 for 11 at the free throw line. She had 9 rebounds and shot 71 percent from the field.

MT defeated Troy 75-60. They now will move on to face North Texas Sunday, Feb. 15 in the Murphy Center.

This game will have a Pink Zone theme, where the lady raiders will auction off their jerseys after the game. Money raised by the auction will be donated to fund cancer research in honor of N.C. State women's basketball head coach Kay Yowe, who died last month of cancer complications.

Mumbai natives protest "Slumdog Millionaire"

Director Danny Boyle's film "Slumdog Millionaire" has grossed close to $86 million, and has won the hearts of movie-goers and critics everywhere.

However, people living in India are protesting that the title of the film should be changed from "Slumdog" to "Slumdweller, Slumman or Slumhuman." People living in Mumbai, which is where the movie was filmed, said they are personally offended by Boyle's decision to label them as dogs.

Film critic Rajeev Masand said that Boyle has explained the title before, saying that it derives from the word underdog and that is why he chose it. Masand said that it makes sense why people would be upset, but it also makes sense that Boyle would choose this title to describe the character of Jamal (Dev Patal.)

Some said they liked the film, but didn't understand the need for a negative connotation in the title. Mumbai native Monique Hood said that she refuses to see the film because of the title.

Decrease in online advertising hurts Facebook

With hundreds of Web sites like Juicy Campus closing because of a decrease in online advertising, it is only a matter of time before certain sites such as Facebook and Myspace might have to consider the same option.

Facebook has made 24-year-old Mark Zuckerberg a rich man and has simplified the social networking for teenagers and adults who can communicate with only the click of a button.

In 2006, Facebook rejected $1 billion dollar bid from Yahoo!, but accepted $250 million dollars from Microsoft Word in exchange for a 1.6 percent share.

As of now, online advertising doesn't seem to be slowing this social site down, but as economic times get worse more sites will begin shutting down. Especially, if business owners don't understand the value of online advertising.

Only time will tell what will happen to this multi-billion corporation we all love to update our statuses on, making it a little too easy for stalkers to track us down.

USA Swimming suspends Phelps for 3 months

After photos were released of swimming eight gold medalist Michael Phelps smoking marijuana in a bong, he's been under constant media scrutiny.

USA Swimming has announced that they will be suspending Phelps for 3 months, and will not compensate him with financial support during this period.

Even though USA Swimming is taking action, a cereal and snack company, Kellogg Co., has agreed to renew their contract with Phelps despite the photos.

Because of the 3 month suspension, Phelps will not be able to compete in March at a meet in Austin, Texas. He will have to wait until May, which could jeopardize his placement in the July world championships in Rome, considering he would only have two months to practice.

Teacher's sarcasm on Holocaust causes uproar

A Minneapolis 8th grade teacher sent an e-mail to faculty entitled "Torture Time!" asking for suggestions for a Holocaust simulation she was planning for her class.

The e-mail asks teachers to participate in a day of sheer pleasure where they become Nazi Officers and Adolfs.

School Principal Coleman McDonough said that the teacher was trying to be sarcastic and humorous. He said the e-mail was in poor judgment.

The e-mail also stated that children would be forced to wear yellow stars, and would actually have to pay $10 for them. The teacher said that if they died during the project then she would keep their money, and for those who couldn't afford the badges she said she would threaten detention. If the students managed to survive then she would return the money.

While I believe this teacher went about the project the wrong way, I believe she originally had a good agenda. She wanted to bring the seriousness of the Holocaust to life, but that's hard to believe when she's practically joking in an e-mail.

The Holocaust killed nearly 6 million Jews, so bringing attention to it is important in the classroom. But reenacting and joking about it is not.

Summitt first NCAA coach to reach 1,000 wins

UT Lady Vols head coach Pat Summitt reaches her 1,000 win against University of Georgia in Thompson Boling Arena on Thursday, Feb. 5.

The Lady Vols had hoped to gain the win for their coach on Tuesday against Oklahoma, and even though they played their hearts out, they could not match the defensive efforts of Courtney and Ashley Paris.

Tonight the Lady Vols shut down Georgia with a 73-43 win despite Vicki Baugh's knee injury on Tuesday. She will not be out for the rest of the year. Alicia Manning also experienced a thigh injury tonight, but continued to sit on the bench and support her team.

Following in her teammates footsteps, Glory Johnson stepped up and filled the role for Baugh by grabbing rebound after rebound and putting up jumpers. Shekinna Stricklen backed Johnson up and had a remarkable night, but hit the hardwood pretty hard during the second half, causing her to sit on the bench for several minutes in the second half.

While all these injuries might have given Georgia an advantage, it didn't. Georgia still trailed by 30 points with 10 minutes to go in the game.

After the game, Summitt was presented with several gifts including the game ball, a painted portrait and jewelry.

"We have the greatest fans in women's basketball," Summitt said. "I want to thank the administration for giving their commitment a long time ago before it was popular to women's basketball, and what a difference it's made."

Summitt said that she has been extremely blessed in her coaching career.

"We may be young and we may be inexperienced, but our goal is to be in St. Louis for the final four," Summitt said.

Alysha Clark speaks about life on, off court

Fans know her as the 5-foot-10-inch unstoppable force under the basket. Coaches know her as the go-to player that will always step up and make big plays when needed. But very few people know her as a model, reporter and volleyball player.

Alysha Clark is currently a junior forward for the Lady Raiders and the second-leading scorer in the nation but outside of basketball, she is a regular student with goals and aspirations.

"I want to pursue modeling," Clark says. "I took some modeling classes this summer and throughout the first semester.

"That was something I've always wanted to do."
Clark explains that in addition to modeling, she would also like to pursue coaching. After helping coach an Amateur Athletic Union team, Clark says she loves being able to give knowledge that she's learned from coaches to girls so they can be farther advanced than she was when she was a junior in high school.

Originally, Clark says she wanted to be a print journalism major but switched over to broadcasting.

"When I was at Belmont, I was taking a sports reporting class, and I was writing stories from our games when I was hurt," Clark says. "That's just something that I find interesting, because you get to capture the athletes' emotions before and after."

Before making the switch to basketball, Clark says that she played volleyball and followed in her sister's footsteps in running track.

"Those were my first two loves," Clark explains. "I loved playing volleyball and running track in my freshman year of high school."

After moving to Tennessee in her sophomore year of high school, Clark says that basketball was so demanding that she didn't have time to continue playing volleyball and running track. However, it was at this time that she says she really began to develop a love and passion for the game through Mount Juliet High School Head Coach Chris Fryer.

"I learned how to use my left hand my freshman year, but he really developed my left- hand shot," Clark says. "He taught me basic post moves, like how to pivot and how to move."

While adapting to Fryer's coaching methods, Clark says she really found herself believing she could play at a Division I level basketball team. Encouraging her, she says that Fryer put confidence in her to work harder during the season to make up for lost time.

"[He] made me think that maybe I can go and really do something with this [basketball]."

Belmont drafted Clark and pursued her talent even after she became injured. Clark says that originally she wanted to go to Vanderbilt with her friend and now Vanderbilt junior guard Jessica Mooney. During this time, Clark says that she wanted to be a pediatrician.

"Belmont was consistent in contacting me and sending me letters, and that really meant a lot to me," Clark says. "I didn't want to take a risk in my senior year and end up having no where to go."

Clark spent her time at Belmont well, considering she helped lead the team to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007. She also scored 1,000 points in 52 games, making her the fastest athlete at Belmont to do so.

In 2007-08, Clark sat on the sidelines of the MT bench due to transfer rules. Clark says she had played Head Coach Rick Insell before and decided to come to MT because of the program he is building.

"The type of mentality and skill set that he teaches, and his passion for the game provides girls the opportunity to reach the next level," Clark says. "[Sitting on the sidelines] was hard, because I wasn't injured and knew I could be out there.

"I took it as an opportunity to see the game from a different aspect."

When it comes to the experience of playing at MT, Clarks says that the schedule is more grueling, considering Insell schedules games against Courtney and Ashley Paris from the University of Oklahoma, LSU and UT.

"I wanted to compete against the best if I want to be among them," Clark says. "Seeing we can compete with those kinds of teams only gives you confidence."

Many people see Clark as an WNBA hopeful, and especially after practicing with 2008's ninth draft pick, Amber Holt, Clark says it would be an honor to play in the league.

"It would be big, especially for my family to get to that caliber," Clark says. "I do it for me, but I also do it for my parents [because] they've always provided so much for me and I've always wanted to do something and have a career where I can give back to them.

"Regardless if I go fifth pick or 15th pick, having that opportunity just to be there is something that I can say to my children that at least I've been there.

A 4-year-old girl dies in washing machine

The young girl climbed into a washing machine and her 15-month-old brother started the device, according to Orange County Police.

The machine's controls were said to be push buttons located 20 inches from the ground; therefore, her younger brother had easy access to them.

The little girl had been tumbling in the water filled machine for two minutes before her mother found her. As of now her death has been ruled accidental.

Lady Raiders destroy Dever in 77-49 matchup

Middle Tennessee women's basketball team achieve 15 wins in a row at Denver.

After the big win against Denver, MT is now tied for third nationally and handed Denver their first loss in the Sun Belt Conference in Denver.

Junior forward Alysha Clark racked up her 11th double double, while junior forward Jackie Pickel set the net on fire with 3-pointers from behind the arch. She walked away with 13 points.

At halftime alone MT held a 25 point lead, and even though they were only up by 2 with 8 minutes to go in the first half, head coach Rick Insell found a way to fire up his team.

Following her teammates, junior forward Brandi Brown had 18 points.

The Lady Raiders also had 17 steals and 20 assists, which ultimately added to the large deficient win.

MT will take on Troy on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. in Alabama.

Woman texting, driving jailed for 21 months

Philippa Curtis had sent and received 20 text messages before the collision that killed another driver in 2007.

Curtis will serve 21 months in jail for being irresponsible and careless while behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.

Because of Curtis' obsessive texting, she hit the stationary car of Victoria McBryde's car going 70 mph, resulting in McBryde's death of a serious brain injury. After crashing into McBryde's car, Curtis spun out into oncoming traffic and hit two more vehicles.

Curtis told the court that there were times when using a cell phone while driving is acceptable. Just hearing these words, leads me to believe that Curtis is not sorry about the murder she committed at all. Obviously, texting instead of paying attention is just too important for this new inmate.

Now the only communication Curtis will have to the outside world will be through a plate glass window.

Summitt goes for 1,000 win against Oklahoma

As of now, the legendary UT women's basketball coach sits at 999 wins.

Pat Summitt has been coaching at UT for 35 years, and is second for most NCAA championships held. She now holds eight.

Despite having a rough 2008-09 season with young and inexperienced players, Summitt has dedicated her life to the sport and refuses to give up on her team. Calling this a rebuilding year, the Lady Vols have been quite inconsistent. Sometimes they win and sometimes they don't. Sometimes they beat higher ranked teams and sometimes they get trampled on by teams that are not ranked.

In January 14, 2003, Summitt became the first woman to reach the 800-win plateau. She also became No. 1 on the Division I all-time wins list in 2005, surpassing Dean Smith's record of 879 wins.

She has signed and coached players like Candace Parker and Tamika Catchings, who now are WNBA all-stars.

The Lady Vols lost to Oklahoma 80-70. Looks like Pat will have to wait for her 1,000 win against Georgia.

Teenage girls chatting on Facebook at high risk of depression

Adolescent girls using electronics to obsess over romantic disappointments more likely to become anxious, depressed.

Of course, girls are more likely than boys to discuss emotions, but actually repeating their feelings over and over can lead to unhealthy activity.

Stony Brook University in New York psychology professor Joanne Davila and colleague Lisa Starr, conducted an experiment by interviewing 83 girls around the age of 13. They followed up with the girls a few years later to continue their testing of depression symptoms.

Their report was published in the The Journal of Adolescence and found that repeatedly discussing problems with friends leads to higher levels of depression.

Davila and Starr also found that text messaging among teens is also a bad idea, because it can make them more anxious.

Other than girls, Davila said that boys are also at risk.

"It's most likely they are discussing the game last night or meeting up, but there's a possibility they could start discussing emotional problems more than in the past which would put them at risk."

Finally a study proves that gossiping via text message or Facebook could prove miserable.

N.C. State women's basketball coach dies

Women's college basketball lose legendary coach at 66 to cancer.

N.C. State head coach Kay Yow died on Jan. 25 after losing a long battle with cancer, dating back to 1987 when she underwent surgery for breast cancer.

During her career, Yow inspired generations of players, won 737 games, is honored in the Women's Basketball Coach Hall of Fame and is No. 6 on the women's coaching career list.

After Yow's surgery in the late '80s, the cancer returned over a decade later in 2004. Yow was told in 2006 that the cancer had spread to her liver, and took a 16-game leave of absence. Even though Yow wasn't sitting on the sidelines rooting her team on, her players brought a lot of heart and passion to prove to Yow just how much she meant to them.

Watching N.C. State upset No. 1 ranked Duke in the A.C.C. tournament in 2007 really gave Yow a reason to continue coaching. Her players wanted to win the NCAA championship for their coach, and she wanted them to achieve something they could cherish for the rest of their lives.

Following Yow's return, players began wearing pink shoelaces and headbands for breast cancer.

The NCAA also got involved with Women's Basketball Coaches Association's "Think Pink" or now "Pink Zone" to help raise money to be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.

Teams participating in "Think Pink" or "Pink Zone" would not only wear pink accessories but wore pink uniforms to raise awareness about breast cancer and money for the foundation.

Unfortunately, N.C. State did not make it to the final four, but did inspire people with their determination to overcome ranking status and make an impression early on in the year.

The Unborn: Jumby wants to send tweets

If only babies could tweet...oh wait they can!

I wasn't aware that fetuses were capable of sending tweets to people on Twitter, but I guess anything is impossible these days.

Twitter is a site where people can have discussions and send short "tweets" or messages of 140 characters to people. It's a great way of spreading news and reporting on events live, so naturally journalists use it; however, apparently they aren't the only ones.

Baby Tyler's dad hooked his son up to his new invention called a "Kickabee," which sends tweets to followers every time a baby kicks in the womb. The signal is carried through a belt worn by the mother.

Tyler has now become the world's youngest twitter user. Wow.

I wonder how many people would follow Bristol Palin's baby...

Texas basketball coach fired after 100-0 win

Usually coaches are rewarded and congratulated after a huge win; however, Covenant School Head Coach Micah Grimes was fired Sunday after refusing to back off the pressure against opponent Dallas Academy.

Grimes also sent an e-mail to a newspaper on Sunday, claiming that he would not apologize for the large marginal win. He said that the ladies of Dallas Academy should be ashamed, but that he was proud of his ladies for playing with "honor and integrity."

Then again, the academy specializes in helping students with "learning differences," such as short attention spans and dyslexia, and hasn't won a game in four seasons. This alone should have given Grimes a hint that feeding his own winning streak would only crush the other girls.

At half time, Covenant School led Dallas Academy 59-0, so why didn't Grimes pull his main string out and give other players some time on the court? With a lead of 59, Grimes could have afforded to lose a couple of turnovers, rebounds and let the athletes play for the love of the game instead of statistical purposes.

Despite Covenant's lead, Dallas Academy did not give up, which is something that shows a great deal about their individual characters. What started out as a disappointing and excruciating game to watch, soon turned into a teaching session for Dallas coaches.

Jam Skating

Listening to the beat of the music reverberate off the hollow walls, I watch as people swivel and sway past me at high speeds with their bearings roaring and their metal plates clanking against the hard concrete. They aren't in a hurry to get anywhere considering the track moves in a circle. I know it's not about going fast or beating others to each corner. I know it's really about feeling the beat of the music and letting it affect your movement.

Many people consider Jam Skating something that is stuck in the '70s, but really Jam Skating is very much alive for our generation. For those unfamiliar with this sport, it's basically incorporating different dance styles on skates. Some people describe it as break dancing on skates, but I don't see it that way. To compare it to break dancing would be impossible, because not only are you flipping and lifting yourself up with arms' strength, but you are also carrying extra weight on your feet, which is something break dancers certainly don't have to endure. My passion for this sport began when I was 8 years old. A few years after learning the basics and how to stand up, I picked up the art of "trucking" or jam skating. The term for the act isn't important, but for the sake of this blog let me clarify that it has been called many things. Some people refer to it as shuffle skating, shadow skating, bounce skating, rexing, crazy legging and roller disco.
Even though it has many names and moves, jam skating only has one home and that's at the rink. Growing up, I watched as professional jam skaters formed groups and performed in the middle of the rink almost every night. It was amazing to watch how different individuals could come together to move as one. I knew I wanted to be able to do that someday.

For anyone interested in learning how to jam skate, I would recommend going to your local skating rink and practicing. Once you feel comfortable circling the ring, you can go online to check out videos with beginner tutorials.
